I guess that explains why I have been getting multiple stay credits for 2 rooms since March. I just kept thinking I was getting lucky

I can see a new thread already around mid Jan, 2013 with someone asking who else has renewed Plat already. 3 rooms, 7 nights of hotel hopping, plus SPG Amex credits for those who have the biz and personal cards.

Agreed. This will actually help me out, but I prefer that overall stays be restricted to the member's room.

It would seem to be all to easy to convince friends and family who don't travel much to let one book and pay for their rooms, although they would instantly repay the elite by check or cash. For business trips that will be reimbursed by the company, the boss could insist on putting the rooms under his/her name and company credit card. It's a farce.

Now one more clarification, if you will:

If someone books one room on an eligible paid rate and another as an award or cash+points, does s/he get credited for two nights or one?
Just a note that post #30 and post #42 have been updated with a recent clarification from late April, which I had missed along the way.

No wonder, we have first tier, second tier and third tier platinum.
I have upcoming 20 nights x 3rooms stay and all are under my name.
So easy to be a platinum, especially members who book multiple rooms for family and friends.
It may affect the change of platinum/gold qualification soon?

Affect it how? They already have added the 75/100 night tiers to plat.

I think the change makes sense. I can't see how the 3x17, 3x34 math holds up to reality - if I have a 34 day stay in a hotel I am NOT going to let you take credit for it

Probably not even a 17 day stay. Even beyond the "family" case, if I have a business stay and bring a co-worker along who will make this one trip in the year and stay 5/6 days, I'm driving revenue for the hotel, and should probably get full credit. But anyone who stays more than 10 nights ought to know well enough they should take credit for it. Will be interesting to see whether this has significant impact on the numbers of plats.

So if you want to "buy" Plat :
make a C&P reservation in a cat 1 hotel :
17 days, 60k Starpoints, 1250$

Contradicting info from SPG FAQ's??

From SPG.com (starwoodhotels.com) FAQ page:

"How many rooms can I earn credit for per stay?

Members can earn Starpoints for up to three rooms per stay when 1) each room is paid for by the member and all
charges are settled at check-out; and 2) one room is occupied by the member. Please note that members will only
get one credit toward elite status, not all three rooms will count."

why would you want to spend so much????with c&p at a cat 1 property, you can also do it with 8 different single night stays booking 3 rooms per night (only one room on the last night)....this will get you 25 stays & 25 nights & it will only cost you 30k points & $625....

There is a lot of collateral material to catch up with. SPG has overridden that clause with their new policy effective March 1. The Lurkers might want to get someone to update the text you've quoted.

Imagine if someone had to go back and update all the posts in the past years to remove/update responses to this very question.

Good to point it out.
