The (now changed IIRC) GM of the Tremont is a lovely chap and very on the ball. We had long and very interesting discussions about Chicago hotels and the market in general, and the Tremont in particular.
He mentioned his thoughts on the Tremont branding.
My suggestion to him was to consider Le Meridien as a potential fit, especially for the Chicago market. And use the Le Meridien Versailles in Montreal as a template, as both properties have similar, unique structures and a great degree of individuality that can flourish under the Le Meridien flag, as opposed to some of the other Starwood brands, which require a more obvious level of consistency and somewhat cookie-cutter approaches.
Starwood - Feel free to reward me in starpoints for the above consulting two cents.

+1 I stay here ~30 nights/year and get upgraded everytime now. Worth staying at if you need to be in Chicago often. Cheap, personal, and very well located. For those who want to park, check spothero.com ... they have a lot within a block from the hotel where parking is super discounted.

I am taking my first trip ever to Chicago in June, accompanying a friend that is attending a 3 day event.
Almost all hotels in the area are at rack rate. . .I was able to book the Tremont with birthday rate for 2nd and 3rd night at birth year pricing.
Very happy about this deal and looking forward to our stay

It isn't associated with any of Starwood's 9 brands at the moment.

There may be some still around from the original REIT from which Starwood ascended, but a lot of these were sold off or renovated and then branded. The Tremont is the only non-branded Starwood property that participates in SPG, however. All of the haciendas are part of The Luxury Collection brand.

My notes on a recent stay:
Was already in the city and called ahead to see if I could check in early and was graciously told to come any time which was nice.
Checked in to a room on the 5th floor (no status). The walls had spackle on them with no paint and black marks all over them (I don't care about the cosmetics, but still), blanket with holes, A/C system did not work (they say they are between cold/heat in JUNE, yet it still should have turned the fan on), tub leaked with a rust stain that must have been several weeks old, the A/C filter was completely clogged and had dust balls hanging off it, my white socks turned soot black when walking on the floor.
I spent one night and requested the manager come to the room. He came with the director of housekeeping and while apologetic, offered many excuses...
Old buildings collect more dust and the air filter was changed recently. Baloney
Old buildings tend to have pipe leaks more often.
I've lived in vintage buildings. I've stayed in the Whitehall across the street and similar vintage hotels.
I was moved to the 11th SPG floor which took care of most the problems, except, once again, when I walked on the carpet, my white socks turned black. They were so disgusting, I threw out two pairs during my stay.
The manager did say my folio would be adjusted for the inconvenience, but I never got one e-mailed upon check out.
And so you know my tolerance, this is the first room change I've done in probably the past 150+ hotel nights.
Essentially, buyer beware on this property.

There's a reason why rates can often be so cheap for this property, despite an incredibly prime location right off Michigan Ave close to the Water Tower.

I will be checking in tomorrow for 3nt stay. I'm greatly looking forward to this as it's my first time to Chicago!
How is the hotel restaurant? What has been the platinum breakfast lately? (though i'm usually fine with good coffee, a banana, and yogurt)

Ditkas is a fine restaurant. Breakfast is hosted there and you can get good continental breakfast. Nothing cooked though.

There's a Starbucks across the street - may be a better value for you spend ~$7 over there for the above three items, and take your 500 points.
