FlyerTalk Forums Thread Wiki: Post How Properties are Handling the New Platinum Breakfast Benefit
Please read: this is a community-maintained wiki post containing the most important information from this thread.

Last edit by: slocouple
With reports of what properties will be providing as part of the new "continental breakfast" benefit for Platinum members beginning to surface, I thought it would be a good idea to consolidate posts on how hotels are handling this benefit. For me, the way in which hotels interpret this new benefit will influence where I stay in the future.

Salient details may include what the breakfast consists of, where it is served, whether it is applied to more than 2 people or more than 1 room. For those properties that previously provided a breakfast, note whether the breakfast offering has changed and/or whetmher the 500-point amenity is still provided in addition to the breakfast.

I'm interpreting the breakfast benefit and upgrade fees posted in this thread to be per person and per day, unless stated otherwise. If anything in this list is missing or incorrect after having been posted in the thread, please PM me so that I can fix it. Thanks!

List up to date as of post #360 + several others have made more recent updates.

Scottsdale - The Phoenician: Continental breakfast from the menu or cold buffet or a $35 credit (for 2) towards the hot buffet (valued at $25/person). Hot buffet is very limited but it does have an omelette station. Jan 2014; somewhat dependent upon the server as some servers just gave full a la carte breakfast for free while others did the $35 credit for 2 people [Songer5]

California
Anaheim - Sheraton Anaheim: Only normal lounge access for breakfast. No breakfast amenity option in restaurant, no buy up, no credit.
Costa Mesa - Westin South Coast Plaza: $12 credit per person (2 max) at Grab-and-go/Starbucks, choices such as oatmeal, breakfast sandwiches, cereal, juice, yogurt, pastries and starbucks drinks.
Culver City - Four Points by Sheraton Westside: Full buffet breakfast in addition to 250 point amenity (3/2014).
Dana Point - St. Regis Monarch Beach: Continental breakfast from menu at Motif restaurant ($20 value). You can choose hot items and pay the price difference. Platinum guests also receive 15% off all food purchases.
La Jolla, Sheraton - Lounge access with wide variety of fruit spreads and pastries. Good enough but not great.
Los Angeles - W Los Angeles Westwood: $12.50 credit in the restaurant (enough for juice and a muffin) or 2 drink vouchers.
Los Angeles - W Hollywood - Voucher valid for: Juice ($6) and Coffee ($3.50); Granola/Yogurt/Berries ($13) or Oatmeal ($8.50); One pastry ($4.25 - croissant, muffin etc.) Buy up to full breakfast: No continental/buffet options here - just ŕ la carte. Comments: The breakfast itself is very good and they are certainly generous with what they provide, however no substitutions or upgrades. I wasn't even permitted to substitute for a lower cost item. Although they did not charge Mrs. YVR for her cafe latte ($1 more than the coffee).
Los Angeles - Four Points by Sheraton Los Angeles International Airport: Full breakfast. (Prior to the change, provided full breakfast + the 250-point amenity and a free drink.)
Los Angeles - Westin Los Angeles Airport: Lounge access, buffet style with hot and cold items, eggs, croisaint, fruit etc. January 2014

Newark - Aloft Silicon Valley: Continental breakfast, no credit for other items.
Palm Desert/Palm Springs - Westin Desert Willows: This is a SVO resort and offer of Platinum Amenity points had been inconsistent in the past. Now, they offer the Breakfast Amenity option which is available in the Market in the clubhouse. Confusing training of the staff there - but after some pressure they did offer coffee, juice, muffin/cereal and piece of fruit. It's all take-away and there is no option to buy-up even though they also prepare limited hot items such as breakfast burritos, egg dishes, etc.
Palm Springs, Parker - Served at Normas. No ability to credit towards other menu items. A Parker Continental is bowl of granola with berries & milk, mini chocolate croissant, large croissant, and choice of juice OR coffee. Additional FT comment: This is what I was told at check-in, as well. However, when I asked my server at Norma's, he said I could substitute a $20/person credit and order whatever we wanted, instead. With tax/tip breakfast is in the $25-30 range p.p. at Norma's but the credit was well worth it, in my opinion.
Pasadena - Westin Pasadena: Pre-plated continental breakfast in the restaurant, consisting of croissant, muffin, fruit, juice, and coffee, or a $16 credit toward anything on the breakfast menu.
Pleasanton, CA Sheraton: Hot breakfast served in Club Lounge 7 days a week. Same stuff every day, whole and cut fruit, oatmeal, eggs, potatoes, bacon, yogurt, coffee, tea, juice. Nothing special, but it was nice that Sat/Sun was no different from Mon-Fri. By myself so I don't know about an extra guest, but the lounge attendants certainly aren't checking and I've noticed families of 4-5 chowing down in the mornings. One family was annoyingly using the lounge as a personal playpen for their screaming toddler, but that's a story for another thread.
Petaluma - Sheraton Sonoma County: Breakfast via lounge access, including only fruit, breads, cereal, and oatmeal.
Rancho Mirage - Westin Mission Hills Resort. Continental buffet in restaurant or $18 toward menu items. $7 upcharge for full buffet. Outstanding selection. March 2014.
San Antonio - Westin Riverwalk - Cold buffet in Zocca restaurant. Includes cereal, pastries, fruit, yogurt, granola plus tea/coffee.
San Diego - Four Points Sheraton: Property previously offered one complimentary full breakfast buffet ($14 retail value) for each Plat or Gold SPG member. Property now offers two complimentary full breakfast buffet as the Plat welcome amenity. Breakfast buffet includes omlette station, bacon/sausage, scrambled eggs, French toast, cereal, yogurt, sliced fruits and assortment of juices.
San Diego - Four Points Downtown: You get a plastic container of mixed fruit, a pastry, and a carton of orange juice at the 1st Avenue Grill. No option to upgrade. And when you ask for coffee, you're pointed to the free coffee bar that's set up in the lobby for all guests. No cereal or yogurt option which is disappointing as I'm on a pre-summer diet! Every other Four Points I've stayed at has offered a full buffet breakfast as their Platinum amenity.
San Diego - W San Diego: Pastry/bagel/English muffin, yogurt/fruit, and coffee/juice (choose one from each category).
San Diego - Mission Valley Sheraton: 500 points plus breakfast in the club lounge which was a nice buffet.
San Diego – Westin Gaslamp Quarter: Choice of 500 points or breakfast for two...not both. No lounge. Really nice and pretty looking menu with Platinum breakfast options (10 in total - 6 food and 4 drink): Cereal, Oatmeal, Fruit, Bagel, Muffin, Yogurt, Juice, Coffee, Tea, Milk. A choice of three items from this menu is offered per guest. Alternatively, the option to help yourself to the cold buffet (including cereal, toast, bagels, pastries, muffins, ham, cheese, fruit, yogurt) is offered.
San Diego, Westin - Continental Breakfast described as all the cold items + Oatmeal at the breakfast buffet in the full service restaurant. Ability to upgrade to the full buffet - hot items for $5/person. During holiday with no breakfast buffet, I was offered $25 credit per person at the restaurant.
San Diego - US Grant: One item per person from the Grant Grill Menu ($40 value approx). Another comment: While staying at the US Grant over the weekend my wife and I were each offered what paullevi described above: The Continental Breakfast or a $14 discount off any item (no free drink).
San Francisco - Palace Hotel: Continental portion of buffet (generous) in the Garden Court. Full buffet is an additional charge of $8

Had a nice chat with the front desk manager while he checked me. Out of curiosity I asked him what the breakfast consists of. I was told it's a continental breakfast in the restaurant but I'm better off taking the points or a local amenity and getting breakfast in the lounge. In his words, "the lounge breakfast is better". I was told it has everything the continental breakfast has plus one or two hot items.

This was extremely convoluted. We took points. But then the front desk gave a card to my companion, saying she had to now give that in the club lounge. Apparently only the registered guest (one person) is entitled to the club lounge, and she was offered this as she is the second guest? The other option is that her and I could go downstairs to eat from the restaurant buffet instead, I didn't need to show the card, but she did. The option to eat downstairs was not a possibility when we stayed in Feb. Being that this hotel was great, I think the front desk agent did this with the intention to give us the option to have breakfast upstairs or downstairs without issues. Again, this was offered in addition to points.

Provides platinums BOTH breakfast at lounge as they used to do previously and choice of the 500 point amenity or local amenity. I clarified with the front desk agent and he was adamant that plats can get both (breakfast and one choice of local amenity or points)

The Fairfax, Washington DC

Offered choice of 500 points or continental buffet in their restaurant.

The restaurant had a buffet with an extensive amount of fruit, cereal, yogout, and pastries. They also had a few hot items (egg, sausage, bacon, and hash browns), but you have to pay $6 to upgrade the platinum breakfast for the hot items. This seemed very odd to only have part of the buffet, but it was actually on the menu this way ($18 for continental buffet and $24 for full buffet) and it seems this is the way they have always done it. I asked about ordering off the menu but was told that was not an option.

Overall, I am happy with this benefit as for $6 I was able to enjoy a better breakfast then what you would find in a lounge. The hotel also wins because I would have just run to a coffee shop otherwise. The whole arrangement is a bit strange though.

I am not sure what is strange about this. It sounds like a textbook example of how the hotel is supposed to implement a benefit of free continental breakfast with an option to buy up to a full breakfast for the price difference they would charge regular paying guests

I LOVE this hotel. I would say I have at least 15 stays here already (about 45 nights). I always skip breakfast so points for me!

Any experience with breakfast for more than 2 people in a room or more than one room?

I can't remember the last time I purchased breakfast in a hotel. Hence this new benefit is almost worthless to me even if it is implemented well and does not lead to any decreases from hotels that already offer breakfast. OTOH, I expect some of my beloved breakfast offerings (St Regis Singapore, Tokyo Westin, The Nines, Westin Atlanta Buckhead lounge, LRM Shanghai, former St Regis Shanghai Pudong now reflagged as LC,.....) to be significantly downgraded. I fully expect this supposed benefit to be a big minus for me.
What an incredibly asinine comment! "This doesn't affect me so I don't care!". A 2-year old can come up with something more insightful (Reminds me of the old adage, "economists know the price of everything and the value of nothing."

Let's recall the reasons Starwood enhanced PLAT benefits:
- # properties did not open their lounges 7 days/week;
- breakfast offerings were inconistent across the chain.

I (for one) am looking forward to the new amenity!

We'll see how this settles down. I've been Hyatt Diamond on and off for three of the past seven years, with SPG as my main program.

SPG has basically copied what Hyatt used to give, which is continental breakfast in hotels where there is no lounge. Except that (1) Hyatt offered it as well as the check in ammenity and SPG offers it instead, (2) SPG is offering the option to choose the non-lounge breakfast even if there is a lounge, (3) Hyatt offered a full continental breakfast, which in hotels with a buffet meant everything cold plus oatmeal and toasted items.

Hyatt's old policy still meant uncertainty from hotel to hotel about what would be included, how big a credit would be offered toward the full breakfast, etc. You were never quite sure what would be on the bill when it arrived. SPG seems to be in the same situation, but worse as the buy up option will not be universal, from reports so far the credit is sometimes derisory, and the continental option will not always be served in the restaurant or offer the full range of cold buffet items.

Hyatt obviously recognized the problem, because about two years ago it changed its policy. Now Diamond members get full breakfast (buffet or any menu item plus beverage) for everyone registered on one room. With two children that benefit can be worth 100 USD a day in the nicer US hotels, more in Europe.

It seems like what SPG is doing here is aimed at checking a box on the comparison chart. But unless implementation is improved it will hurt itself in the long run by causing frustration and uncertainty to its customers.

I just found it a bit strange that they have two different prices depending on which items you select on the buffet. It was not really a big deal though. As I said I happily paid my $6 and enjoyed the breakfast.

I agree their implementation of the benefit itself was spot on. I would be happier if I could apply that $18 to order something off the menu, but certainly understand why they would prefer I eat the already cooked food on the buffet, versus making something fresh.
