Gifting SPG Award night to someone, stay credit?

So, according to the FAQ on SPG's website, if I gift an award night to a friend, the friend can and will receive the stay credit.

Q: If I want to gift an SPG Award stay or night to someone else, who gets the elite status credit?
A: If you (giver) decide to gift an SPG Award stay or night to someone else (receiver), the receiver will be given the stay/night credit toward elite status qualification. If the receiver is not an SPG member, he or she can enroll and receive the stay/night credit. You, the giver, will not receive any elite credit for that posted stay.

I'm trying to book a night for our upcoming trip, and my mom is happy to book an award night for us from her account. Can someone tell me how this work? we can't just transfer points and book from my account because the addresses are different.

In the past, you are only able to add the recipient as a second guest in the reservation by calling SPG, but I don't think there's a way of adding their SPG account number. How can the receiver (the person who actually stays) then get the credit? Does the new policy also means that the receiver (the actual person who stays) will also get points on incidentals as well?

I'm trying to book a night for our upcoming trip, and my mom is happy to give us 10k points from her account (to empty her account) for us to use. Can someone tell me how this work?

the way it would work is spg would create a share/with reservation (1 reservation, 2 accounts) so both your mom and you will be on the reservation. you can add or enroll yourself into spg and get an spg number and when you check in the Front desk agent can put your number in so you can get stay/night credit. you can get points for incidentals.

Is this still officially applicable? I've successfully received stay credits 2 out of 3 stays this year without any intervention, but could not find the FAQ on the website anymore

Gifting SPG Award night to someone, stay credit?

Interesting. A friend was going to book an award stay for me and I chatted with platinum chat and they told me there was no way I could get the stay credit since my SPG# can't be put on the reservation.

Hi Christina

your statement is not in line with SPGs T&C 3.1.c. No points, stay or night credit should be given. This change has been made in early fall and has been discussed here on FT.

The T&C are very clear and unambiguous on this point. Nothing the FAQ or a lurker (even with the best intentions) can say would have more power than that.
In the event that an SPG Award is given to a third party in accordance with the prior sentence, neither the SPG Member nor the third party will earn any Starpoints, Eligible Nights, or Eligible Stays in connection with such SPG Award.
Of course, that doesn't mean it doesn't happen (and pretty regularly at that).

Of course, that doesn't man it doesn't happen (and pretty regularly at that).
So, if you'd like to try to make it happen, how would you get the receiver's SPG number into the reservation?

The best way would be to have the member present their SPG card/number at check-in. Very good chance the property will goof up and post it as their stay. No guarantees, but it has happened.

A related question about stay credit

I have a different but related question I would appreciate help with...

I currently have a points stay booked for a Sheraton for my wife and I and I am planning to cash book an additional room for my son and daughter-in-law to stay in. Can I get stay credit for my sons room?

Yes, stay/nights/points if you book the room under your account and pay for the room yourself.

See http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/starw...-per-stay.html for more details.
