For those with questions regarding the best timing for applying for a Platinum or Gold status match, this is the policy to keep in mind for your individual determination:

Elite Expiration: The Elite Status Challenge entitles members to one full year of elite status, from one renewal period to the next (i.e. the end of February one year to the end of February the next year) and only carries over if they are upgraded on or after March 1st (whereas earning status naturally* gives members elite status for the remainder of the current year, carries over for the entirety of the following year, and expires at the end of February in the third year)

Elite Status Challenge Expiration Example: If a member is upgraded via the challenge on or before February 28th, 2017 they retain status until February 28th, 2018, the following year. If they are upgraded on or after March 1st, 2017 they retain status for the remainder of the year, all of 2018, up until February 28th, 2019.

There are some agents that would rather make up rules instead of looking for the correct answer. I do recall reading some posts where if status is earned in the first two or three months of the year, you status expired at the end of February the following year. They may have been going on old data. Regardless they should have looked up the correct answer.

Yeah, the 2nd agent explained it very logically - if you earn the status before the annual status changeover (end of Feb), you get it until the next changeover. If you earn it after, you get it until the one after that.

Still, it would be a failing of IT, not of any agent, if there's not a very clear cell in the customer's record showing when their status expires.

The agent said that in February 2018 I would drop to Gold. I asked him to confirm this and he restated it. Is this accurate? It seems to be in conflict with the statement of the challenge. Do I need to do something to make sure my account has been updated properly?
Actually if you open the apps and go to My Account then click My SPG Card, you can see the expired date there (I've also finished my challenge in Jul-17 and in the apps it show 02/28/2019 as the validity date)

as to why they only show this information here, I also don't know

Ok, now that is helpful!!! I had searched quite a bit online to see if that info was hidden somewhere in the system before taking the time to call, and couldn't find any references to that. Good to know! I'd never known about the virtual card.

Very useful to me because I'm on a low-travel period for the next few months and it will make a difference whether I will be Platinum or Gold when my travel picks back up next year; glad to see I have it through 2019. Great challenge!

Double Nights promo with Platinum Challenge

I just registered for the promo where I can earn double elite qualifying nights between September 15 and December 15.

Would this also impact the number of nights if I would do a status challenge for Platinum? If so I would only need 9 nights for platinum instead of 18

Hi EHAM1,

This won't have any impact on the Platinum Challenge.

Our system will only count one night towards the challenge, which means you would still need 18 in order to be upgraded.

Datapoint for Platinum Challenge - just checked out Sunday morning for my 18th night (well it was technically 20th but 18th night happened during the same stay) and got on a plane home. When I got off the plane I was already Plat, having received the confirmation email during the journey.

Faster than my bonus points from the Take Three, promo, which I am still waiting for..

Hello! This might be a stupid question so forgive me as I am new to the points and miles game. But if I do a status challenge and reach SPG platinum and then status match to Marriott and match to United I would get Silver Status with United. To get Gold would I still need $6,000 of spend? Or just the difference between Silver and Gold of $3,000? Not worried about miles or segments.

That's exactly how I have UA Silver, and my PQDs still show as $0.

As a general rule, matched or promotional statuses only give you the benefits of that status; they don't "count" or give you credit as if you qualified for it. Thus in order to earn the next higher tier beyond a matched/promotional status, you must meet the full requirements of the higher tier.

Thank you for explaining! I figured it was that but wanted to confirm.

Hello,

I am new to the SPG challenge.

Does anyone know if, since the merger, the nights spent at Marriott hotels portfolio count towards the challenge or is the challenge limited to the original Starwood hotels portfolio?

Thank you for your help!
