I don't recall an SPG double stays offer for the beginning of 2008.
It was targeted -- some got bonus points; other got double points; others still got double stays (me included). Helped me requalify Platinum by the end of April.

How about if I also make use of the buy-2 nights-get-1 night-free promo?
Technically, I will stay in the hotel for 3 nights...but I will only get bonus for 2 nights, ie: 1000 pts?
Understand that this is me speaking and not Starwood or SPG, but if you want my personal observations, then here they are: With the economy in the shape it is currently (and has been for some time), I would not make any assumptions regarding the frequency of SPG promotions or size/generosity thereof past April 30, 2009. Every department/subsidy of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide works on a budget and when that budget is exhausted, the carrot dries up. I understand that it is expected for Starwood/SPG to run promotions non-stop and on a so wildly expensive basis as to literally force you into a hotel bed, but at some point along the way, one reaches a point where there are diminishing returns on that kind of investment.
Without commenting on whether or not I like the promo, I agree with others that the reasoning here doesn't hold up to logic. Down economy means more people staying at Motel 6 than SPG, and the proper strategy would more likely be to offer the best incentives possible (along with lower rates).

It is interesting that many here seem to agree this promo obviates hotel hopping. As far as I can tell, hopping (at least for plats) would still garner an additional 500pts per stay, in addition to the 500pt/night from the promo, or am I missing something? The way I read this, a single 10night stay would net...
500pts for Plat stay
5000pts for 10 nights at 500pts/night
5000pts for the 10th night
--------
10500pts for the 10 night stay
This vs 10 one night stays...
5000pts for 10 Plat stays
5000pts for 10 nights at 500pts/night
5000pts for the 10th night
--------
15000pts for 10 one night stays or 4500 more than a single 10 night stay
