Soft openings are all the rage if you followed the opening of the W Hong Kong.
Yes not everything is open but some great deals/upgrades are usually on offer.
I cannot wait for this property to open and I suggest that you contact the Hotel, tell them where you normally stay (Ritz) and that you want to be wowed!
I've usually found it fun to stay at a new hotel. Sure, there are glitches from time to time but, usually, they are minor. (And the hotels are usually very 'compensating' for your time and trouble if you have any problems.)
Plus, it's sort of adventure. Rather like exploring a new found land or city. In addition, there's nothing like that 'new hotel smell'. (pun intended)

I'm in the same boat. The wife and I will be spending a few nights in St. Kitts, so I decided to stop off in Miami for a night or two to check it out. I have to use some of those free night coupons while they are still good.

You are banished to the 4 Points Miami Beach for a month!
As Maude (RIP Bea Arthur) would say, "Bonecrusher, God will get you for that!"
I usually stay a month after opening to give staff, in all fairness, many which are new to SPG/Starwood policies and procedures, a chance to gel.
I then give a review and most likely if its a location I like, will return and update my review. That why I like master threads, you can see the evolution and performance of a property over time.

Kida torn if I should stick with the Ritz or try the W
Looks great from the outside - sixth sense tells me give it a go. Location decent.. Let us know - very very curious!!
How bad can an upscale property be in a great location ?
There are bound to be bumps along the road with any property
However there are bumps at times with seasoned properties too
When a new W opens they usually bring in some strong team members to get the property jump started. It could be a lot of fun
W Hotels has been at their game for many years and this has been a long anticpated very important destination property
I look forward to a vist myself.
By all means go for it!
Cheers

Its like 2 or 3 hotels up from the Ritz right?
I like that part of SB
It's about 5/6 blocks north of the Ritz. To give a visual, it's north of the Setai hotel and south of the Avis rental car on collins.

I couldn't agree more. Many of us chose other properties on SB proper and that hell hole, four points Miami Beach has had a horrid reputation here on FT.
I am excited about this property, but will not get my hopes up. I don't want to be disappointed like I was with the W Buckhead. I'll be sure to give a comprehensive review when I stay.
Sorry for the delay in responding. Cheap Elite is correct about the location. There are a number of good restaurants within walking distance. Fairly convenient location.
