Construction virtually comes to a halt when Hurricane season starts, plus the condo/real estate bubble in SoFla is probably slowing things down?
What? Where did you hear that construction comes to halt in South Florida during hurricance season?
Thats about as ridiculous as saying constuction comes to halt in San Francisco during earthquake season.
There is no seasonallity with construction the problem some buildings under constuction currently is the lead time from material shotages due to rebuilding from the previous years hurricanes.
Tried googling the most up-to-date information/completion date and could not find anything recent.
Does anyone have any new news?
-- Is it still a green-lighted project?
-- I.e. Completion Date?
-- Hotel Category/SPG Participation (Initial description was Condo & Residencies)

There isn't any information at the moment just speculation. As with every other new hotel, the closer to the date of opening things will be confirmed.
Thanks Cheap Elite -- I also looked at the website but the information on it is pretty much static, no new updates. Seems like this project is stalling again and 2009 may not be realistic.
Would you know why SPG.COM has hotels posted in its' directory that will open in 2010/2011 but doesn't have W South Beach?
An educated assumption would be that the contract/terms are not finalized and are still subject to change/cancellation.
However still no way to book rooms. Could either of the Lurkers shed some light on wether this property intend to open as schedule and when they will release inventory ?

Hopefully I will not run out of Marriott rewards points until the W opens, been waiting quite a long time, South Beach Marriott is now a category 7
40k points a night and they are dwindling fast. Cannot bring myself to stay at the four points Miami beach again even though they give me a suite when I have stayed there in the past.
Quite understandable that neither yourself, william nor Thyetus, would know ..but someone at Starwood should right ? The opening is less than 5 months away, it isn't unreasonable to expect some clarity on this.. or am I /we asking too much

Well I haven't tried sending them a postcard but yes its the first thing the platinum conceirge suggested (actually tried herself). I don't think anyone's listening to the voice mailbox either.

W South Beach opens July 2: will it be a good stay experience July 4?
I do a yearly trip to South Beach on the 4th of July and usually stay at the Ritz Carlton SB. I see the W will open June 2nd. According to the website only the Spa will not be open yet, any issues with staying 4 weeks after hotel opens?????
Kida torn if I should stick with the Ritz or try the W
