"Free" calls

From an insert in the key pack at Sheraton El conquitador tucson:

"In response to comments from our guests, we have eliminated several incidental charges in favor of a daily $7 resort Service Fee. You will be pleased to find that there will be no additional charge for the following services:

Local Calls

800 or toll free access

Long distance credit card calls

Incoming fax

USA Today newspaper

Self Parking

Gee..thanks...

Hilton had a similar ploy at the Pittsburgh Hilton and Towers: unlimited internet high speed access (using PC ethernet card) for "only" $9.95 per day. Local calls were 1.00 plus 10 cents per minute after 30 minutes. I did not use it so I did not get charged.

Were the Sheraton $7 daily charges mandatory?

The Westin La Paloma (tucson) does the same thing, but its $8. The first I learned of it was after getting to the room. The reason its a "crock" is that it should be part of the quoted and posted room rate. It was not optional.
