Our experience is generally the published benefit, Plat + one. Some properties have gone beyond this, however, although I suspect it is often the server who makes the call, and usually in a buffet situation.
We have never been questioned about bringing our kids into a lounge for breakfast, and several properties have made a specific point of telling us at check in that our children are more than welcome to join us.
Cheers,
There actually is an official SPG breakfast card (size of a business card) which a number of hotels are now giving out to platinums who choose the breakfast option outside of the lounge or if the lounge is not open (as may happen on a weekend when there are not enough plats + those who pay to upgrade). On the card is says MEMBER AND ONE GUEST.
Thanks for the suggestion for the Club reservation; that'll get Lounge at least...but as poster above mentioned, what if Club is closed? Will they give free breakfast to Club floor in that case?

If we are talking about Platinum benefits, the Plat member has complimentary access to the Club lounge and if the lounge is closed due to capacity issues, the member will a receive goodwill gesture, not necessary free breakfast.
Does Starwood have a list of suggested goodwill gestures (or what would be the minumum) if the lounge is not available? Otherwise I am betting that there will be at least one hotel will use a bottle of water as a goodwill gesture thereby relieving them of their obligation to the platinum guest and at the same time allowing them to overload the lounge with non plats who are willing to pay extra for a club room (or even plats who are willing to pay for something that they should be getting for free). This is a very slippery slope

As far as I can recall, the choice of amenity depends on the discretion of individual property.
Since I'm Platinum, wouldn't breakfast+Companion be available downstairs regardless of lounge availability?
The goodwill would be for Club rooms that don't have lounge access (which did happen to me once when I was Gold and weekend lounge closed, they goodwill'd us breakfast buffet downstairs).

That is proprietary information between the brands and SPG. Something will be offered; perhaps even a choice of various offerings from which the Platinum member can select.

As I understand it, if the club lounge is closed, they would have to offer you a gesture of goodwill of some kind. It could be complimentary breakfast or it might be something else.
Otherwise, you can choose it as your welcome amenity of choice. If so, it is good for you plus one person in the room in the venue set up by the property for the length of your stay.

Isn't this just for Sheratons, where the lounge is supposed to be open 24/7 now? Or does it really now also apply to Westins and LCs with lounges, etc.?

Again, isn't the goodwill gesture when the lounge is closed only applicable in Sheratons, where lounges open 24/7 are now the brand standard? I've certainly been in Westins that provided nothing as an alternative to an existing but temporarily closed lounge.

I have not seen any Westin properties naming their lounge as Club lounge. I may be wrong.
The statement is not applicable to Luxury Collection properties either.

We've had similar experiences with our daughter -- if it's a "table service" breakfast, it seems up to the server whether or not we get charged for her; however, I think every "buffet service" breakfast they've not charged for her.
