It can take up to 7 business days from the day you qualified for your Lifetime Platinum status to be picked up by the system.

Starwood / Marriott merger
Q : What will happen to my Lifetime Status when the programs merge together in the future?
A : Rest assured we will always recognize your Lifetime Status, whether it is today in your earned program or in the future with a new, combined program.

Presumably if one had approx 1000 nights and 9 years of platinum but was no longer going to earn platinum the hard way in 2012, could you just book and use 50 free nights at a category 2 hotel to get platinum for year 10 and then have plat for life? Is there a limit on the amount of free stays and or hotel category that would count? Thanks.

Gold for Life ... Way over 500 nights so it must be the 10 year requirement. Hmm. To embarrassed to call and ask ... so, will wait to see if the web portal will include this data one day.

The other potential impact for those of us who conventionally renew plat is an increased pool of Plats chasing a diminishing pool of upgrades (especially after the suite nights awards go live).
The suite nights awards will indeed change everything, but I think the effect of the Lifetime levels will be positive for Starwood. Most people don't think in the same terms we do on Flyertalk...I think there's a bigger audience out there that will interpret the lifetime level as an invitation to keep using Starwood forever and enjoying the benefits of the status, not trying to chase a 2nd status at another chain.

Me? I'd probably do some of both, like you suggest. But the average guy who has spent a decade at a consulting firm, racking up nights and points on the road, is going to look at this as strengthening his bond to Starwood in the future.

Also interesting to note that the total nights required for LT Plat here is a lot lower than at Marriott. The 10-year Plat rule is (I think) tougher though. I know Marriott has a counter and I'm in the 600-night range but I'm not sure what the exact parameters are for Gold and Plat.

Excellent New Benefit

This makes SPG better than Marriott on lifetime status. Now I have a tangible goal to look forward to making 500 nights and Lifetime Platinum status.

If I understand correctly, this means that a five-night award stay from March 2011 will not have added five nights to my Lifetime total. Fair enough - just want to be sure.

How about nights earned for having the Amex SPG card? I see that status from having the Amex cards will count towards the "years of status" total, but will nights earned pre-Oct 1 2011 for having the card count as well, or like award nights, count only after that date?

Thanks for the clarification and the superb improvements to the program!

Just received my phone call from the Platinum Desk. What a nice touch, reaching out to each member that qualified personally. My agent only had 30 people to call so this sounds like quite the elite group.

I've got to wrap my own mind around the stays vs. nights things a little better, I think.

Nights fall into the year in which they occur, so any nights in 2012 would not be applicable to this, even if the stay began in 2011.

Yes to AMEX card nights as far as helping to attain Platinum, but not as a factor in adding to the number of nights needed for Lifetime status. No to award stays pre-October 1, 2011.

So does this mean the number is not correct on the "My Account" page? For my wife, for example, she's had the card, but has 0 nights since we always book under my SPG number.

If she has the US SPG AMEX, she should have 2 stays and 5 nights credited to her account. 4 stays and 10 nights if she also has the Business SPG AMEX. Might be best to call in and find out what's there or not.

However, these additional bonus nights are only going to help get a member earn Platinum to satisfy the number of years at Platinum component. They add nothing to the number of nights needed.

Kudos to Starwood!

For the longest time I've logged into my SPG account, looked at my stats ('339 stays and 1167 nights since you joined in 1999') and wondered "is there anything else?"

Now there is. I'm thrilled!

Got my Lifetime Gold email today

Kudos to Starwood, and thank you.

I will need to check to see how far away I am from Lifetime Platinum, and I don't think that I am that far away.

But what Starwood has just done is to secure a majority of my bookings for the years to come - brilliant strategy!!! ^

Just checked my account and I have stayed 510 nights, but how can I find out how many years I have been a Platinum?

Yes. Your SPG Membership Card will state SPG Lifetime Gold or SPG Lifetime Platinum if you have achieved this designation.

Lurkers, so, if I am currently a Lifetime Gold and regular Plat, will both be noted on my 2012 Plat card? Just out of curiosity.
I think there will be more folks in this position than Lifetime Platinum, so yes, it is possible that your membership card could say you are Platinum with Lifetime Gold.

Call and ask or wait for the email or letter advising where you are currently.
