Major Improvements of SPG Platinum
Embargo lifted.
Summary of Changes to the program
I thought I should consolidate some of the announcements that I shared with the community this morning:
1. Lifetime SPG Status from 500 Nights and 10 years of Platinum membership
2. Free continental breakfast as welcome gift options at check-in, starts March 1st.
3. 10 Suite Night Awards for every 50 nights
4. Your24™ - Ability to check in and out within 24 hours + 4 points/USD for every single dollar.
I think these represent a major overhaul of the SPG program and it definitely makes it greatly competitive.
Programs: US Chairman, SPG PLT, Marriott PLT, and most of the airline programs

This is great! Everything seems the same or better as speculated. I'm still waiting to see the T&Cs and get field reports on how hotels are handling the breakfast benefit. Hopefully most will offer an upgrade to a hot breakfast at a nominal fee. Also, does it include all brands and resorts?
Also regarding the 75 night threshold, did you hit 75 nights last year? I'm curious if it only activates when you hit 75 nights for a specific year, or you get it for the entire calendar year following when you hit 75.
They are offering more benefits (maybe Ambassadors) at the 100 night level.
This is from tomorrows WSJ. Fair use excerpt.

Starwood on Wednesday is enhancing its loyalty program by adding features for frequent travelers, such as rolling 24-hour check-in and check-out times and personal travel assistants, dubbed "ambassadors," company executives said.
......
The use of the perks will be determined by the frequency of stays, with customers who spend 100 nights a year at Starwood properties qualifying for the highest level of service.
Programs: US GP/*G, SPG PLAT, Nat'l Executive and oh yea, I have an AA account too.

Why? I just called SPG and got connected to an EU call center as was given all the details! Here's a few hilights.
1) Suites benefit is for all stays (including C/P and award stays)
2) Lifetime plat does NOT need to be consecutive, but all 500 nights must be from "Platinum years."
3) Suites can get you "better" suites at all-suite properties. For example, the rep said at the St.R Bali, this could get you up to a Pool Suite - cool!
4) UGs will be requested immediately (for a SPECIFIC suite type, property-specific, of course) but not confirmed until five days before arrival, or up until day before arrival.
On a side note.... Big to all the SPG Plat reps who made the last two hours so much fun - you know who you are! Haha

The answer you received in point 2 is incorrect. The 500 nights do not need to be from platinum years. From the T&C: Lifetime:
1.What are the requirements to become SPG Lifetime™ Gold?
To earn SPG Lifetime Gold status, an SPG member must have a minimum of five years of elite status during his/her SPG tenure AND 250 eligible nights since joining the program.
2.What are the requirements to become SPG Lifetime™ Platinum?
To earn SPG Lifetime Platinum status, an SPG member must have a minimum of 10 years of Platinum status during his/her SPG tenure AND 500 eligible nights since joining the program.

H,mm... Maybe a lurker can help settle this one. You may just be right!
think its odd that they would announce a new benefit that impacts THIS year that is retroactive to LAST year's activity when we were unaware of it. seems like they are moving the bar midway through the game

Beat expectations across the board and puts SPG as #1 again in the hotel loyalty program game. There have been a number of (valid) complaints over the past few years in comparison to other programs and SPG has done a commendable job of addressing them. In the world of "you'll never make all the people happy all the time," SPG has done a great job of finding something for everyone.
