Not sure how the St. Regis in Monarch beach makes the cut and the St Regis Princeville does not.

I agree. But then, AAA 5 Diamond requires large staff and fluffy service, and Princeville is much more practical

If the Phoenician is a 5, the Canyon Suites is a 6 . For those who are not familiar with these 2 properties they are adjacent and share some facilities but there is a world of difference in the rooms and service.

Good! That is not a 5 Diamond property, IMHO.

Agreed re. the Phoenician and Canyon Suites. Had the priviledge of visiting both this past fall. There was a "wow" factor at the Phoenician...then we got to the Canyon Suites and said, "WOW".

Enough said about the 5 diamond ratings.

AAA ratings mean absolutely nothing.

You may not agree with them, but factually stating that they mean nothing is ludicrous. They are widely using in advertising and promotion.

Just curious about everyone's reaction to the St. Regis Houston. Is it based upon some bad incident or just personal experience vs. other more worthy hotels?

I'd booked a room there a couple of years ago for a layover, but then cancelled when inventory for award seats improved, so I no longer needed a room overnight. It was a AAA 5-Diamond at the time, generally has favorable reviews, and is rated 4.6 of 5 stars on Starwood's site.

i've stayed at this property a couple of times & while i agree that its a decent property, it is in no way worthy of the rating....there are many other starwood properties i have stayed at that are much better....

What Five Diamond status means to Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe
Receiving one of AAA's 126 Five Diamond hotel awards means more to the Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe, than payback for intense training and complying with AAA's rules.

It will likely mean more business from around the globe, veteran general manager Allen Highfield told me Thursday.

Sneak peek: AAA's Five Diamond hotel winners for 2012
...
Ritz-Carlton has a total of 77 hotels, with 44 in the regions that AAA covers. Four Seasons has 86 hotels, and 35 in AAA's regions.

When it comes to producing Five Diamond winners, no other luxury chain comes close to the two, an analysis of the 2012 list shows. The two brands alone account for about 60% of the hotels on this year's list, the analysis shows.

The other luxury chains that have more than one Five Diamond hotel are: Mandarin Oriental (4), Starwood's St. Regis (4) and Rosewood (4), and Peninsula (3), JW Marriott (2), Fairmont (2) and Trump (2). Hilton's Waldorf Astoria brand doesn't have a Five Diamond-rated hotel.
