And, if one is unhappy with the substitute, one should ring Starwood Customer Service (if negotiations with the property are unsuccessful)?
Er no...no one said that the substitute has to be acceptable to the member. After all, you can't sling a dead cat here at Flyertalk and hit three people that would have the same opinion as to whether it was or wasn't.
It does not need to return a similar value as the item it is replacing. That is up to the properties' discretion.

Not to start the "what if" game but...
What if it is one of those bottles of booze (i.e., Bretagne) hotels sometimes give but the Platinum guest doesn't drink? "Er"...
I stayed at the Princess Kuiulani and the Royal Hawaiian last week - NEITHER OFFERED A SUBSTITUTE AMMENITY although both gave me a card at checkin stating what a guest gets for the resort fee. Both knew that I was platinum as I was given the 500 point platinum amenity. So much for Starwood policy.
Did you report them to Corporate Customer Service?
I am planning a trip and will likely use Hyatt resorts until this SPG nonsense is settled. As a diamond, I don't believe I have ever paid a resort fee at a Hyatt.
I do not want to show up at a resort at the start of a vacation and have to argue with a clueless desk agent over this junk. It's much easier to just stay at properties that don't play these games.
It should not be up to the customer to police SPG properties.
Programs: UA 1K/0.940MM; SPG Pt-195; PCC Pt-194; Hyatt Pt-188; various other programs of no consequence

It definitely is up to us. If nobody complains, nothing will change, and if you don't feel strongly enough to complain to someone who can do something about it, your complaint here is nothing more than a rant.

This is the biggest "+1" I have ever seen in my life.
