Basically, a Smile-branded flight will get you what a non-Smile-branded Thai flight gets you. Check the fare bucket carefully before buying.

I do not believe this is accurate.
I also do not believe this is accurate. Also, Eurowings is most definitely listed separately on the UA site and ahs different rules versus LH/LX/SN/OS.
It is more SilkAir than United Express AFAIK.

Smile could count, as it's just a sub-brand. It's not listed out separately on the UA website like Edelweiss or Eurowings are. However, a lot of Thai fare buckets get you nothing or heavily reduced accrual- in RDMs and/or PQMs - in MileagePlus.

Very true statement..always always check the award charts for fare class and the mileage. Got burned a few years ago and missed Gold by 3,000 miles because last two flights on Swiss Airlines to Europe at the end of the year got me zero PQM's!

Even if we don't understand the logic of it, there must be one and it certainly brings them more money, otherwise they would not be doing it.

As with everything in business, don't give away more benefits/lower price as long as you can get away with it. They have probably calculated that the very small number of pax they will attract (the non TG *G) are not worth the additional expense.

By now most *A members or, at least most "big" members, have subsidiaries that are not in any sense connected to *A. Even worse, A3, for example, has now almost all of its domestic flights operated by OS (not a member) using an A3 plane.

It's Thai that does not want Thai Smile in Star. Thai Smile was created to compete with LCCs and Thai works hard to keep its costs down. Awarding miles on other programs means Thai Smile needs to buy those miles. Access to Thai lounges for Gold members would also be charged to Thai Smile.
