Or UA could offer a couple more flights to JFK (ORD-JFK, IAH-JFK, etc).
Why?
The JFK market handles O/D well and EWR can handle connections. With the A++ ATI in place it actually makes plenty of sense to just run both rather than consolidate everything to either EWR or JFK.
But from ORD or IAH there are many better connecting options than JFK to *A destinations.

If UA had more flights from their hubs to JFK then it would enhance connections between other *A carriers. I am not saying we need 6 ORD-JFK or IAH-JFK flights a day.
NH, OZ, TK, OS, CM, SQ, SN, MS, AV, TA and CA all fly out of JFK.

So that when UA Fan wants to connect at JFK he can. Don't you know airlines must make their schedules according to my needs?
On a serious note, I was looking at SQ's flight to FRA and wanted to connect at JFK. Also there was no award availability at any of the other hubs. I was just thinking that if I was with one of foreign airlines I think it might make sense for me to change to EWR. I used to live in PHL and my family always preferred EWR to JFK. EWR seems more centrally located to people in NY and NJ. Plus one can set up codeshares with UA.
Not really. Westchester, LI, and Fairfield county all tend to prefer JFK. Even from certain places in Bergen County, JFK is more convenient.
Yes I know there are lots of people who would prefer JFK, but in my opinion I think there are more people in PHL, NJ and southern NY. For Intl flights people don't mind travelling a bit far to catch a flight.

You count me as one of those people that regularly makes the trip up to EWR for flights. It's a good 30-45 minutes closer without traffic to Philadelphia than JFK.
Laying asside that EWR is a closer drive for me (although clearly it is not for many), I find it a much more pleasant airport. Staff seems friendlier and the facilities cleaner. And the easy train to/from Manhattan is great.
The following *A airlines serve EWR: AC, LH, LO, LX, SK, SQ, TP, & UA.

UA has nonstops to JFK from LAX & SFO. PMCO had CLE-JFK a while ago, but it was discontinued as people preferred EWR for connections. They also had coshared service EWR-JFK.

Besides the hubs, it is sometimes useful to look at connecting UA/LH, AC/LH, or US/LH at non UA hubs. Lufthansa has service from ATL, BOS, CLT, DFW, DTW, JFK, MCO, MIA, LAX, PHL, SEA, YOW, YUL,YQC, YYC, YVR, YYZ in additon to all of the UA hubs except CLE & GUM.

I usually looked at that when I lived in PHL, however I am now DFW based and since it is not a Star hub, cannot do the above.

Maybe US was being left off for some reason since it is not international from EWR or JFK

You are correct. I was looking at it form the perspective of direct connections to UA hubs (excluding SFO & LAX) for international travel. But US doesn't have a lot of flights to JFK either.
