Flying Standby...

Is it possible to fly standby without a previously purchased ticket with southwest?

No. You have to have a purchased ticket between the same city pairs, and then you may try to go out on an earlier/later flight if space is available. However, when you voluntarily change the flight, expect the fare difference between your current fare and the full fare of the new flight. But nonetheless, you have to have a ticket already.

Yes...

You can also purchase a standby ticket at the ticket counter if a flight is booked full and you don't have a prior reservation. It is a full fare and refundable ticket that you can either get your money back if you don't make it out, or use it towards a confirmed reservation. Also, if you have a reservation on hold and you purchase it less than 30 minutes before departure at the airport, it will be issued as a standby ticket.
