LAX-LAS WGA fare is $57 but the code is only bringing it down to $34. That isn't 50%...and sounds more like false advertising to me.
The discount is off of the fare prior to taxes & fees, so the "true" discount will always be a bit less than 50%, with the discount being smaller the cheaper the fare.
Could I book a round trip (9/5 returning 9/11), and no-show for the return.
Or would the unused travel funds of the return trip incur some sort of penalty?

I have the same question. I suspect that it will work just fine, but it would be nice to have some confirmation from someone that has tried something similar in the past.
Though unlikely, I'm also wondering if any of the legacy carriers will price match this deal later today.

$34 is a great deal. Take it or leave it. As mentioned above, you're getting 50% off the base fare. Southwest cannot discount the taxes, and per new regulations, taxes must be built into the advertised fare cost.
