SFO 5am Baggage check 6/30
30 minutes to check bags at 5am
only 4-5 employees and 4-5 kiosks
Recommended arrival 1 hr before flight according to SWA website
Be forewarned this is not enough time if Southwest staffs
this bad

My guess is you ran into a situation similar to one I recently experienced at DEN. A 30 minute wait is probably not normal over the course of an entire day, but may well be normal for that hour of the day, each day of the week.
