The beauty of the Rapid Rewards award is that it is completely transferable. You can give it to anyone you like and they can show up and use it. You can even separate the two segments and use them as two one-way tickets for different people. Try THAT at United!

Think of it as the currency of the 21st Century frequent flyer.

And four $76 RT's between HOU and CRP gets me a free ticket to go anywhere, anytime?* Hot dawg!

(*Subject to a half-dozen or so blackout dates.)

** Only the September 11 security fee, though. So it's actually $2.50 (or $5, if you're connecting) each way to use the RR ticket.

Does that mean that there is an active market for them? Are they bought and sold on e-bay, for instance, and if so what is the going rate?

Don't forgot that the expiration date plays a factor in value too.

Additionally, several sellers split the ticket into two one-ways in hopes of netting $325-$350 total.

Actually, you really aren't supposed to sell them. But they come with a booklet of free drink coupons - on Ebay you will see most people sell the coupons, and then say they are giving you the free flight as a bonus.

In this situation, I believe Southwest is consistent with all other airlines.

According to this website, WN's RR are fully transferable. You can try Googling for "mileage broker" for others too.

If Southwest Airlines sues a mileage broker and successfully subpoenas its business records, I expect that anybody who did business with the broker will get a reprimand letter or have his account closed. Caveat vendor. Find a better way to use your coupons: make some friends and family happy.
