Smoking in the Lavatory - Police Escort you Off

Landed on a WN flight from PDX. We were told to stay seated, then 2 police officers came on the plane. They call up 2 passengers from the back of the plane and take them off. Then we are allowed off.

It turned out one or both of them smoked in the lavatory during flight (I guess flight attendant noticed and then informs ground?). After leaving the plane, I saw the police talking with them. Sounded like they were only getting a warning - police saying "you are only in the air for a couple of hours; use the nicotine gum".

What a moron - I wish they would have actually enforced the penalties to stop that behavior. I guess they don't take it seriously enough!

I was on a WN flight once where a guy smoked METH in the lav while we were taxiing out for departure.

OK...my turn. I was on a flight once when the flight crew set up a meth lab in the cockpit. Who's next?

This happened recently to me on an MKE-DCA flight. A through passenger tried to smoke in the lav, since the FAs wouldn't let him off. They stopped half-way through boarding. Police were called. Pax and his GF were escorted off.

Why was the GF escorted off or did she elect to get off with him? What did she do?

The fact that local cops did not make an arrest does not mean that there will not a whopping civil penalty from FAA flight safety. Could be six months later when the smoker opens his mail to find a Notice of Proposed Penalty which he can accept or fight.

But, bottom line is that being hauled off by the cops might make an impression on even a half-wit. The goal is compliance and this might move the ball as some blogger will likely report this as somebody having been arrested, hauled off in chains and held at Gitmo for 9 years.

How do you know they weren't arrested? Usually cops take the passenger off the plane before they actually slap the cuffs on. I'd guess they were held to at least get a statement, take down the passengers information for subsequent use.

I don't know for sure, but I saw and heard them essentially warning them for future use. "You're only in the air for a couple of hours, you can do it" and "try to use nicotine gum". They were being friendly and helpful to them, not hard on them.
