Get 50% (was 40%) bonus points when you buy or gift points.... through May 31, 2015

I received an email from Southwest today:

Now is a great time to buy Rapid RewardsŪ Points or give them as a gift to family or friends with this 40% bonus points offer available through July 31, 2014!

That gives you only one week to take advantage of this great opportunity. Whether you're traveling within the country or jetting off to one of our new international destinations, buying Rapid Rewards Points can help you or your recipient get there sooner. Plus, when you use your Rapid Rewards Premier or Plus Credit Card to purchase these points, you'll earn an additional 2 points for every $1 spent.

Hurry! This limited-time offer ends next Thursday, July 31, 2014.

I received the same offer.

40% is a decent bonus. It takes the per-point price from 2.75 cents down to $1.96 cents. With the value of a point being about 1.43 cents (WGA, no additional value granted for refundability) you're paying about 1/2 a cent over value.

If your points are about to expire (next couple days), this seems a decent solution.

Time to stock up on Standard Awards! $1512.50 buys 77,000 points enough for 4 Standard Awards @ $378.13 each. I regularly get $900+ in value using these for last minute work trips (AT fare CA-TX). Double that value when using my CP. Considering the end is near for Standard Awards, I am all in this morning for $6600 across my four family member accounts.

Here's the points + bonus = cost

2000 + 800 bonus = $55.00
2500 + 1000 bonus = $68.75
3000 + 1200 bonus = $82.50
3500 + 1400 bonus = $96.25
4000 + 1600 bonus = $110.00
.
.
.
.
60,000 points + 24,000 bonus points for the low price of $1,650!!

Arrow Pay vs Use RR points - Check my math

Booking an upcoming flight (TPA>BOS) in November. Looks like it may be cheaper to pay for the ticket outright vs using/buying RR points.

Current price = $121
Required Points = 6,381

Doing the math @ 2.75 cents / mile x 6381 miles = $175.48
" " @ 1.43 cents / mile x 6381 = $125.07

Will these count toward CP status?

No. But if you buy on a WN Visa, you'll get the 2 per dollar, CP-qualifying.

The only reason to buy these for use on WGA fares would be to top off your points. Now if you wanted to get on the 12:40 PM TPA>BOS today, your options are $347, 21163 points or half of a Standard Award($189 ea. when buying two through this promo).

Yikes! Thanks for the opinion.

It's always cheaper to pay cash than buy points and pay using them; that's how the system works. Otherwise Southwest (and their points retail partner) would make no profit selling points.

On that particular flight, because of the various taxes/fees that are not included in a points booking, you're getting a good value for your points. (This is part of the "additional value" I alluded to earlier; why some people value WN points higher than the technical 1.43 cents.)

$121 / 6,381 = per point value of 1.9 cents.

There is an additional value to purchasing WGA tickets with points instead of cash in that if you cancel (which I often do) the points go back into your account and don't expire (as long as you keep them active) but canceling a cash trip gets you TTF which expire in a year.

Although you also have to factor in the points earning you would get by paying with cash but not with points, so you should also discount the fare price to make an equivalent comparison.

$377 for a Standard Award is a good price. I might even buy some so I can save my UR points for United and Hyatt.
