Gatlinburg on fire (11/28/16)

wildfires spread rapidly yesterday and all of Gatlinburg has been evacuated. Large portions of Pigeon Forge, as well. Over 100 structures have burned, including cabins, resorts, restaurants, shops, and the Park Vista (Doubletree).

A warm front bringing strong winds (40mph sustained, 70mph gusts) got it out of control quickly. Not sure how much the rain from the storm helped the firefighting efforts.

many videos through sites like wbir.com and knoxnews.com.

I wouldn't plan a trip to Gatlinburg any time soon. Pigeon Forge looks like it will fair better.

I saw this on the news this morning. We used to live 45 minutes away. I hope everyone manages to get out okay. I just heard that the chapel where Miss BamaVol was married 10 years ago burned to the ground.

At least 7 people have died around Gatlinburg. Unfortunately the fire spread out of control only hours before the first rainfall came. Since then Gatlinburg and this entire region has had a lot of rain on Tuesday and again today. Virtually all of the fires in the Southeast are doused by now. Knoxville airport got 5 inches of rain today.
