Well, there's a McDonald's right there! New Orleans is relatively small and easy to get around. Is it important to be right in that area? But if you're looking for upscale, Commander's Palace is close by. Coquette, one of my favorites, is not much further. Cavan, a newer place that I have not tried yet but I've heard good things about, also is close. And Shaya, one of the hottest restaurants in New Orleans, is less than a mile away.

Currently in the French quarter hyatt.
Looking for good decent cheap eats close-by and memorable. Fried chicken, shrimp and oyster poboy come to mind.
Might do commanders palace but not sure if we're dressed properly
Any recent recs?

I'd suggest the High Hat Café. Their spicy seared gulf fish is my favorite thing on the menu, and at $20 it's also the most expensive.
If you want walking distance, check out St. James Cheese Co. or Cochon Butcher.

I second Cochon Butcher and high hat. Also, check Coops for a hole in the wall/cheap eats kind of place in the FQ. I love their fried chicken and rabbit jambalaya.

For classic fried shrimp and oyster poboys in the Quarter, try Johnny's on St Louis. Lunch only.
For a nicer dinner but without Commander's dress code, near your hotel I like the Pelican Club, and also the Palace Cafe.

Edit to add:
During August, it's sort of slow for many restaurants here, so they put on an event called Coolinary with prix fixe lunch & dinner specials for the month. You might want to check them out since you're looking for cheaper prices.

And as good as it may be, you can get great fried chicken in any U.S. city. Unless you spend a good amount of time in New Orleans so you can "waste" a meal eating something you can get anywhere, I'd go elsewhere.

And, directcj, if you want ultra casual, take a walk over to the French Market.

Oh No!!!! 45 minutes after posting the above, I just read that the inaugural Fried Chicken Festival is going to be on Sept. 25 in Lafayette Square. Will wonders ever cease?

Thanks for this thread. I just got back from spending 4 days at the Hyatt Centric French Quarter and was able to eat at several of the restaurants mentioned.
Highlights included Coop's Place and the obligatory stop at Cafe du Monde the first night. The Ruby Slipper, The Joint, and Bacchanal the next day. Saturday was dinner at Coquette and dessert at Sucre. Sunday was lunch at Cuchon Butcher, dinner at Paladar 511, and then hitting up Frenchmen Street. Left Monday after breakfast at Stanley.

You're a 10- to 15-minute walk to Lilly's Cafe, which has very good Vietnamese food, and a 20- to 25-minute walk to Shaya, which has amazing (but perhaps more pricy) Israeli food, and Seed, a superb vegetarian restaurant.

Can't really decide where to go for birthday dinner later this month in NO. We've been to Cochon already. Not interested in old-school places like Galatoire's, Brennan's, or C.P. Leaning towards Toup's Meatery, Herbsaint, Le Petite Grocery, or Shaya. Any thoughts among these would be appreciated!
