I am looking at doing a round the world trip next year, not sure whether to buy a RTW ticket, however as I plan to do quite a lot of overland by train, intersperced with short low cost hops and internal flights so I am not sure if I should be looking at a multi centre trip . I am coming up with a big stumbling block which is the cost of a flight from Australia to Santiago, Chile.
Any suggestions as a one way on Lan is looking at £800+ departing from Mel / Syd. Seems very steep, so would appreciate some advice. I am due to travel Late Dec 2011. I am awaiting flight schedules to be released and exact prices, but I know its an expenisve route.ShouldI just accept the costs and get on with it?!
Late December is always going to be difficult to get a cheap fare and there don't ever seem to be cheap oneways across the South Pacific. I think the best you will do is buying a SYD-AKL oneway and AKl-EZE return and throw away the return segment unless you can find a way of getting a oneway on points (AA or QF points would work). but late December makes points problematic as well.
Agree with 3544quebec. The only options that I know of to get from Oz to SCL without going through LAX are LA, QF & AR. Both QF & AR will route you via EZE. Avoid AR at all costs (reliability, comfort, service not up to par) and don't expect a bargain on QF, December being high season. So I suspect your best bet is to swallow the cost and go LAN. At least it's a pleasant enough flight with decent service.
Have you checked the Vayama website http://www.vayama.com/? I just did a quick check for return flights SYD - SCL in January 2010, and found that the cheapest fares were around US$3,200 via LAX and LIM or MEX (long trip!). This suggests that your £800 one way fare isn't too bad even considering your travel dates are a long way out.

If you want to go around the world, why don't you buy a RTW ticket? This is what they are for. One-way flights will mostly cost the same as a return flight, unless you buy with miles (and this is valid for just some programs)
