The Malaysian Legoland is opening this September. What is the best way for a visitor (and family) to get from Singapore to Legoland in Johor Bahru? Since it's actually across the border, is a taxi out of the question? Do (or will, once Legoland is open) bus lines ply that route? Do I assume correctly that one would see an immigration officer on both sides?
An internet trawl suggests an outfit called WTS Travel in Singapore will be running coaches from the Singapore Flyer at 9.30am straight to the park, and back in the evening.
Yes, you'll have to go through customs & immigration in both directions and on both sides.
If you wanted to do it yourself you could hop across to Johor Baru on the service bus then get a taxi from there, or go to the Malaysia taxi terminal in Singapore (nr Bugis) and they can take you to the Johor area. (Not sure how you get back, though...)
Getting to JB from Singapore is very easy to do using public transport. Either the regular public bus, sorry don't remember which bus # or an express motorcoach, both go to Woodlands (the name of the border crossing). Once at the border all passengers on the regular bus will have to disembark (if you're using EZ Link make sure to scan your card), and go through immigration. The express coaches wait for passengers at the border, the public buses do not. Keep your bus ticket or just scan your EZ Link card on the public bus when getting onto the next public bus and you will not be charged for the remainder of the ride. There is a train stn, mall, etc on the Malaysian side of the border crossing, taxis are easily available if there are no public transport options to Legoland. Be sure to check the bus schedule to Singapore if you want to return late at night, I don't know how late the buses operate.
Go to Kranji MRT, exit the station, cross the bridge, take SBS buses 160/170 or the Causeway link bus.
These are regular service buses.
Once you are done with the customs at the Malaysia side, exit via the immigration building, cross over to the shopping mall or the dedicated taxi counters under the bridge. Buy your taxi coupon from the counter, fixed price to your location and this is regulated.
Then you are off to legoland.
I see quite some bit of groupons available that advertise trips to legoland.
Tip: When coming back into Singapore via the public buses, pay using Ringgit. Same numerical amount but different currencies.
Our group of 9 with children and toddler went to Legoland. We opted for a more convenient transport from Porter Xpress. It was worth it, saving us hassle and time with their door-to-door service. We didn't have to disembark from vehicle to clear immigration and custom in long queue. One advice - make sure you wear sunscreen and cap. Wish Legoland had transplanted trees to have more shades. Other than that, we rate it 8.5/10.
Legoland isn't that close to the Woodlands checkpoint, its much much closer to the second link crossing. But no public busses cross at that checkpoint.
I pre-paid taxi from the Woodlands crossing might be pricier than you expect. If you do need to take a taxi from around there, see if you can bargain with a red cab from the street or dropping someone off at woodlands
Otherwise I recommend walking to the opposite side of City Square and grabbing a cab near the big bus stop
