When I stayed, I found the best rates for my room and booked directly through the MBS website, but I have friends who found *somewhat* good availability booking through travelocity and agoda (also useful for using a portal to get additional points).

We got a BRG at the hotel matching to Agoda.

Seriously though, late January is v close to Chinese New Year... there might be a lot of leisure guests looking for a staycation or from neighbouring countries who wants to get away from CNY...
Also it is also quite common among the Chinese to gamble during CNY period, as new year brings fresh new luck.., MBS may have allocated more comp rooms for such guests, and less for revenue guests...

Once you've stayed at this hotel once (so you can place a little "tick" on the list of places to see and things to do in Singapore) there really isn't much reason to stay there again.
The pool is nice, the rooms are spacious, but the location isn't as good as some of the other hotels, and the casino is dull and uneventful.

you have to pay extra half day to use the pool after noon. The room key is checked by machine when you enter the pool area

Sorry, this is incorrect. It may have been like that when MBS first opened, but now they allow you to use the pool as soon as you check in, regardless if you have been given your room or not. You get given temporary keycards, and are offered a communal room in which to rest or get changed into swim wear if necessary (but you are warned that other people are in the room doing the same thing ).

I have a conference at this place in two weeks. Not sure I want to stay again. Recommendations for a place nearby that isn't brutal to walk to in the SIN weather? I'm thinking the new Westin might be good to check out as I need stays to keep up SPG Gold. Hyatt too far. Then there are the Asian chains I know nothing about. If they're nice and closer or even just have a decent bar I'd forego the rewards for a better experience. Suggestions to venture further or should I suck it up at MBS again?
