I have a question to all the frequent LHR/SQ travellers. Around end of May I will be connecting from SK501 arriving at LHR 08:30am to SQ317 departing at 11:55am. As I am travelling on separate tickets I will have to check-in for the SQ-flight in LHR. Both flights are in economy.
As both flights operate from Terminal 3 I guess that in theory I should have plenty of time to make this connection but I am a little concerned about my luggage. Should I bring only carry-on or should I take the chance and check-in some luggage as well. I would much prefer the latter but that will mean that I will have to clear immigration, collect my luggage and find a check-in counter at the departure area. SK has declined to check-in the luggage all the way to SIN as it is two separate tickets.
Considering the “normal” time for clearing immigration with an EU passport and collecting my luggage in LHR T3, would you take the chance? Or would you travel with carry-on only? Airspace over LHR might be a little tight in the morning hours so I would have to take a possible traffic delay into consideration as well. I know that there is no guarantee against the SK flight going tech in CPH or some kind of force majeure and that is a chance that I will have to take. My booking class on SQ is E and it should be fully flexible.
As they are both * Alliance Members you will be able to check your bags through, just show your onward SQ ticket details to SK at check-in.
I called SK and asked this question. They informed me that they no longer check in all the way if travelling on separate tickets. Not even between different *A carriers.

That is the case for British Midlands as well.
Saw a sign at Dublin airport that they will not check thru bags if the passenger is travelling on separate tickets due to high cost of check-thru.

I can confirm this. I have asked the same at SK check-in a few times when on separate tickets and as of summer last year the SK policy is now that SK will not tag your bags to your final destination when on separate tickets - regardless if the second ticket is *A or not. This has been discussed in the SK forum, so to find more info do a search.
Admittedly, I'm no expert on LHR, but I would assume almost 3 hours should be plenty of time, even to collect bags and check-in again. I would not hesitate to do it.

The biggest advantage of SK=SQ transfer in London is that they're both at Terminal 3 so getting through customs and immigration is relatively easy as long as you don't get held up behind a flight coming in from asia. But if you hold an EU passport, it shouldn't be a problem.
SQ on the other hand will thru check your bags to final destination when you show them the SK ticket on the return (presumably you are doing the same routing backwards).
Thanks for your advice. I am on a TG ticket on my way back but I am going to take my chances and check-in luggage in CPH. Hopefully T3 will be a breeze this morning. At least weather looks nice.
Cheers,
