Seeing that the DL/SQ partnership was one of the first alliances formulated (along with SR in the mid 90's) way before any major alliances formed, it is understandable why this has to end as each (airline) has sort of gone their seperate ways. DL to Skyteam, SQ to Star, Swissair - terminated. Crossair reborn as Swiss now into Star, does not count.
My mom is a DL elite an I have been telling her this might happen since the day CO joined *A and she should redeem her miles for an SQ flight. She did not listen and now it will probably be much more difficult for her to get a flight.

Also, SQ/DL still made sense until the NW merger - up until that point, Delta did not compete directly with SQ on any route as they didn't fly that far into Asia, so maintaining the relationship in spite of the STAR/SKYTEAM mismatch did not negatively affect either airline. Now it will with DL taking over NW flying sectors out of SIN and other S.E. Asian markets which are SQ's domain - e.g. BKK

Welcome to FT, but perhaps not the best start for your first post in asking this question?
Sorry, I can't resist any the comments for this time. It's keep their own privacy. I believe DL is no longer to be relationship with SQ. I remembered where DL has already joins the codesharing partnership for a few years before SQ has left from DL. It is transferred to UA. This is where its belongs to Star Alliance.

Yeah sad. As noted above the SQ/DL/SR alliance was a leader. I used their F Class RTW on very many occasions. In the early days, SQ and SR had the best F in the skys (I actually preferred SR, especially out of ATL on the 743) Swissair was also the last carrier to discontinue F in Europe and DL was the best of a very bad US domestic bunch. It was, and I believe still is, the only US carrier to provide free drinks in its domestic lounges. Swissair was an example of a succesful and profitable airline which was totally destroyed by its management.
But with the mega-alliances now formed, I suppose this type of cross-alliance cooperation was doomed.

I think this was a nice feature for all DL elites plus people that rack up tons of miles with relevant CCs in the US and then used those miles to redeem on SQ. I can understand that they are sad. I was always amazed how DL could still get C & F seats on SQ (e.g. the 747) when other *A programs could not and even KF didn't match availability all the time.
To me as a SIN-based flyer and non-DL person this was a very one-way benefit as for the life of it I would not consider redeeming DL on a longhaul to the US or so. If it means more awards in KF and maybe for *A redemption then I won't be crying a about the change, but then I doubt my 'wishfull thinking' will ever materialize.
