CX883/06Oct (LAX-HKG) overbooked - US$7,846 if you will downgrade from J to Y class
Very generous compensation but it wasn't enough for many passengers aboard CX883/06Oct (LAX-HKG) which was downgraded from a 74J (63J*) to a 744 (45J).
The sign at the counter said compensation would be as follows (all 3 of the below) for J class passengers willing to sit in Y:
1) a voucher good for a one-way upgrade good for 12 months on CX
2) US$260 in cash
3) another voucher good for US$7,846 to be used on a future CX flight
I didn't believe they were paying this much to downgrade J class passengers to Y class so I asked my check-in agent who confirmed this was correct. She mentioned that many J class passengers were still not willing to accept this amount of money and CX didn't know how they were going to handle the situation. Note that CX881, leaving 2 hours later was also full in F and J so unable to accept any CX883 passengers.
As you may know, there are 4-74J's (Premium Configuration) in the CX fleet (12F 63J 268Y) which are used for 2 of the 3 daily LAX flights.
* 2 seats are held for crew rest on long haul flights. The 74J has 65J and the 744 has 47J for short haul flights.

If I had a J seat, I would jump on it so quick that that you'd be amazed that I could move so fast. (As long as the voucher was for any flights.)
So were you on this flight?

Very generous indeed. Ignore the cash. It is only a one-way downgrade, but US$7,846 is good enough for another round trip J. There is also an additional one-way upgrade. In other words, the next J flight will be all paid for and one way can actually be in F.

I would imagine they would begin to bump all mileage upgrade/redemption passengers first.

It helps it CX changes the equipment to one with fewer J seats. If you are on the op-up list, they will not even bother asking you for downgrading - as you already know.

I personally would have gladly accepted it too.
But if you are on corporate deal J-ticket, which say "no-voluntary downgrade" allowed, am I still allowed to take this?
And if so, am I supposed to return that refund/compensation to my company?

If you are on a trip paid for by the company, you should not volunteer for any downgrade. The company pays for your trip so that you can work upon arrival. If you take any downgrade, that will defeat the purpose. Any compensation should be turned over to the company - if they have a way to accept that.
That may be one of the reasons why there are not enough takers for the deal.
