Defining a segment
Hello everyone
Although DL no longer takes into account segments flown, I am still interested in what is a segment? How was it defined? I did a search and could not find anything to help me.
If I fly MSY-ATL-JFK...does that constitute 1 or 2 segments?
Thanks

It's one flight number. For example, flight 245 ATL-TUL-OKC is two actual flights but one segment.
If you take an earlier ATL-TUL flight and then change planes to flight 245 to fly TUL-OKC, it's two segments.
Theoretically multi-stop flight numbers keep the same aircraft (certainly the case with flight 245), but sometimes the equipment will change at a hub.
Since segments don't count any more, I just count flights for my own personal uses. So, for flight 245 (I did take this flight to OKC), I count two flights for myself.

JS is correct except for one situation - segment taxes on your ticket. In the example given with flight 245, you would be charged $6, $3 for each "segment" as the aircraft flies - i.e., for this tax a segment is defined by a single takeoff and landing. It is listed on your ticket under the code ZP.
