So, Blackberry has caught up to what I've been doing with my Treo. Since 2003.

I'm now using a 700p for 500-700kbps surfing via EvDO, saving $10 almost every night at hotels. Cheaper than a data card, too.

So how do I do this with a Verizon 700P? Is there an easy link to instructions for this. Also does it matter if you are using a MAC or Windows notebook & does it drain your baterry quicker. Thanks.

Does it work for Cingular/ATT?

I have a GSM (quad band) phone and use Cingular as carrier. Want to use it and notebook for internet access in Europe and Asia. Can this be done? Appreciate your input re where I can obtain set-up info, software and cables etc....
From Cingular point of view, do they charge you for just the connect time (from your regular cell phone contract). Some posts said it costs 0. Is that also true for Cingular?

This is entirely dependent on the type of phone you have....if you give the name and model number, we may be able to offer more assistance.

I've had issues with sprints software....over 2 laptops and 2 evdo phones....i'd say about %65 of the time their software doesn't recognize that the phone is connected. A reboot of the phone and/or device doesnt help.

I currently have a blackberry 7130e with them and its a dream device....and when the evdo modem feature works, its a life saver!

I've been using my sprint phone as a dialup/broadband for years now.
Earlier it was a dialup, but since the Vision started, I can use my phone
as a DSL with a 144kbps connection. Its been great.

I had a software from sprint before, but all I use now is a generic driver
that came with my cable and use the system in-built utility to setup a
dialup. Very reliable.

Its been working great!

"As a DSL"? I don't think so. Your cell phone has NO DSL modem inside it.

TCP/IP is presented to the (laptop) PC from the cell phone (in tethered config) via GPRS or Edge.

Its not exactly a DSL, but from the computer the cell phone looks
like a modem. But works much faster. (144kbps) while you are
online.. you can still continue to get text messages on ur phone.

EvDo is way faster than EDGE, at least bursting up to cable modem, speeds I think. It is also faster than a lot of DSL connections but it has a longer initial delay before data starts moving.

My T-Mobile plan gives me "free" (that is, unlimited) data in the U.S., but roaming charges are expensive outside the U.S.

EvDo on Verizon routinely goes to 750 to 1,500 kpbs I think. EDGE goes into the 200,000 range.

Yes, you are right, but I have some sweet deal that I locked into
6 years ago. Not worth switching at the moment.

2 phones, almost unlimited minutes, unlimited messages (international too)
free emails, web etc... and unlimited data..

144kbps is more than enough at the moment when I travel.

Well, indeed it is for free.

I thought you were not set up right on Verizon or something. I didnt realize you were on another carrier. I got confused, sorry. But Im wondering, if you have an EDGE phone I think it will run at EDGE speeds. I dont think they distinguish based on your account. You might get a free boost that way.
