Just got an email from AC to update my preferences for Websaver emails. In the preferred destinations it lists Taiwan as "Taiwan - Province of China". They must be trying for more flights into the PRC. Next thing you know AC will be negotiating to help fly in the occupation troops to the "renegade" province.

Not really. These days, there is virtually no difference between Republic of China and a Province of China. Old KMT thugs are pretty much in line with China on this this nowadays.

Edmonton has been embroiled in the same debate. The city has been hosting the Masters, an athletic mini-Olympics for those of us in Parnel's age range, and in the opening event, a group of athletes from Taiwan entered the field carrying their flag. The "Peoples" Republic launched a diplomatic protest and the organizers promised the "correct" flag would be used in the closing event. Of course, the Taiwanese athletes then complained...and I am not sure what happened at today's closing ceremonies.

Of course, the irony is that the Island has an indigenous population that, like our own, was overwhelmed by folks from "across the sea" [well straight] who claimed it as their own. Since there has never been a Communist regime in power on the Island, any claim to include it in the PRC is highly specious. At least Taiwan has free elections, and great hand to hand combate in the legislature from time to time!

Canada only officially recognizes the PRC to satisfy the Communists' "one-China" policy. Various names are used for Taiwan to get around this technicality, I believe the Americans and others prefer "Chinese Taipei". "Taiwan - Province of China" is a good one because it doesn't say "Taiwan - Province of PRC". Just mention China without PRC or ROC and everyone is wink-wink happy. However, Taiwan is somewhat discouraged for use on its own because it implies a separate country.

AC is just following Canadian government policy, which is the recognition that there is one China officially represented by the PRC government but only "make note of" the PRC claim that Taiwan is part of this one China. Only governments can have their cake and eat it too!
