List of Shoe Carnival Airports and those who do it right

Ok, I was thinking that we should have a list of airports that enforce shoe carnival and those that actually use some semblance of intelligence in enforcing the shoe rule. Based on the number of threads and day to day changing of rules, i thought it might be helpful to have a somewhat up to date list of airports, and maybe even checkpoints at airports, that are either FT friendly or unfriendly.

I will try to keep it up to date as possible.

To start (based on my experiences with my Ecco soft soled shoes)

Never a problem: LAS (I know, what a surprise)
Now a big problem: MSY (Started recently)
Also not a problem: ORD (AA gates)
Becoming a problem: LGA (UA gates)
Huge problem with MEAN people: DCA (UA gates)

Shoe Friendly - Depends
12/20
LGA
NW/DL terminal

TSA announced "Please remove and place in tray all boots, hard soled shoes, and non tennis shoes. You do not need to remove Tennis Shoes."

I did not remove my Easy Street walking shoes w/rubber soles & leather uppers - not really a tennis shoe, but all went okay - no hassle with TSA.
...........

Add MEM to shoe carnival.... 12/17 - all shoes off - NW

I usually wear my Nike running shoes when traveling. In seldom cases, my Doc Martens.

I'm kinda surpirsed about the European airports. I have never had issues with CDG, having flown out of there at least six times since the US Shoe Carnival started. In fact, my Doc Martens went through just fine there last month (and LIS, same Docs). Nobody else was stopped to remove shoes at CDG or LIS. Same thing with AMS, FRA and LHR.

MUC is the only airport I have had to remove my shoes (and the attitude of the profiler...didn't like the autographs I had in the back of my passport, told him to talk to my Government). That was in 2003.

After clearing Customs, MSP was shoe-friendly last month.

IAD used to be shoe-friendly, but they make everyone remove them after clearing Customs as well.

DEN and SEA are the worst (on another SEA note, I went through there yesterday, discovered the WTMD I usually go through is not as sensitive, my belt works just fine now).

EUG is inconsistent. About every other trip has me removing them.

ONT and SMF are in carnival mode too.

JFK (UA) has been shoe-firendly for awhile.

Canadian: YYZ, YHZ and YOW are shoe-friendly. Though YYZ has the boarding pass fetish.

Should Dulles Be Reconsidered?

I usually use DCA but I've gone through screening at IAD twice in the last month, and neither time have I been urged to remove my Sperry Topsiders, nor have I been sent to secondary screening after wearing them through the metal detector. Has the shoe carnival moved on?

Add Manchester, NH to the "no problem" list (they actually have foot metal detectors that you can run your shoes over before approaching the contract security goon to show your ID and BP). ^

Key West, FL is definately a "problem"/shoe carnival airport. When I last flew out of there in early December, the "gatekeeper" at the WTMD really got bent out of shape when I reminded him of what the SOP does and does not require.

I don't really track whose a problem, but I do know:

SNA - No problem, ever.

CLE - Problem everytime I go
RAP - Only been there once, and a family of 4 (us) all got to take our shoes off.

My two favorite airports (SEA and EWR) are major shoe carnivals, as has been noted above. I've even tried other concourse entrances, now that SEA is all hooked together behind security, and they ALL have shoe fetishes.

When are we ever going to get intelligent, effective security? I might almost grumble less about the shoe fetishes if it was the only dumb policy, but... ARGH.

I think the shoe carnival at EWR depends on the terminal. One of the screeners at the Terminal A United gates last week actually made a point of telling passengers that removal of shoes is not required. Can't speak for Terminal C though.

BWI, DCA, PHX, CLT, and SFO are all shoe carnival in my experience. IAD is mixed---usually okay but a few screeners still enjoy the power trip of "suggesting" (forcing) everyone to remove their shoes.

LAX (T1, T4, T6, and T7) and JFK (T8 and T9) don't even bother suggesting shoe removal and don't seem to care about sole thickness at all; I've worn my running shoes with soles greater than one inch through the WTMD at all of the above LAX terminals since October and was not sent to secondary. Not TSA SOP, but the way things should be done: no metal, no beep, no harassment. ^
