Hold on credit card for incidentals

How much of a hold do you find that the typical 5* hotels put on your credit card for incidentals when you check in.

I've seen as little as $100 at an Intercontinental and over $1000 at a boutique hotel in Europe. Average figure seems to be a few hundred dollars.

I should have said what is the average hold daily for a 4* hotel.
