The New Ultimate Seating Thread, version deux

Boeing 747-400 Refit (code: 74R/744/747)

All 747s in the fleet have now been refitted. They currently operate AKL-HKG-LHR, some AKL-LAX services, and certain Tasman flights.

Configuration: 46 J / 39 Y+ / 294 Y, 14 cabin crew, 2-4 pilots (dependent on route)

__________________________________________

Business Premier Class
* Capacity............46 Seats (layout 1-1 (nose/upper deck) 1-2-1 (B zone)
* Seat Pitch..........Fully lie-flat
* Seat Recline.......Fully lie-flat 6 feet 7.5 inches
* Seat Width.........22" (33" at shoulder level when reclined)
* Toilets...............2 rear of cabin (upper deck) 2 mid-cabin (lower deck)
* Laptop Power.....Available - most international plugs accepted
* Bassinets ..........Row 16 (upper deck) & Row 10 (lower deck)
* IFE ....................Personal 10.4" video screen with Audio/Video On Demand technology.
Best/Worst Seats:
Due to the design of the seats, they all have the same amount of recline, personal space, etc. That said, here are a few pointers..

Row 1 (1A/1K) For couples traveling together, 1A and 1K are close together due to being in the nose of the aircraft (the ottomans are almost touching).

Rows 1-7 are in the old First Class section (in the nose) and some travelers have reported a quieter, more exclusive feeling. Row 6 and 7 may be affected by galley noise.

Rows 16-20 are on the upper deck, which results in less engine noise and 'intimate' feel but crew will be accessing flight deck during the night which may cause light disturbance. Premium Economy is also on upper deck, located behind Business.
__________________________________________

Pacific Premier (Economy Plus) Class
* Capacity ............39 Seats (layout 3-2 upper deck, 2-bulkhead lower deck)
* Seat Pitch ..........39-40"
* Seat Recline .......9"
* Seat Width .........18.5"
* Toilets ...............2 rear of cabin UD, forward of cabin LD
* Laptop Power .....Available - most international plugs accepted
* Bassinets ..........Lower Deck - 27A
* IFE ....................Personal 8.4" screen with Audio/Video On Demand technology.
Best/Worst Seats:
Row 23 on the Upper Deck is the 'best in house' due to unlimited legroom (emergency exit door is in front) The J/K seats all have 40" pitch, the ABC seats all have 39" pitch except 27ABC, which have 38".

Some passengers like the Lower Deck cabin as it is completely isolated from Business and Economy cabins by bulkheads and curtains (some refer to it as having the atmosphere of a private jet). Note however the Lower Deck does have the bassinet row for families. Of the two Lower Deck cabins, the LEFT cabin (A&C seats) is probably the best - the right cabin (H&K seats) also hosts the entrance to the Flight Manager's office and cart elevator, which is used frequently during the night.
___________________________________________

Pacific Economy Class
* Capacity ............294 Seats
* Seat Pitch ..........86cm (34") - Most
* Seat Recline .......6"
* Seat Width .........17"
* Toilets ...............4 adjacent Row 43, 6 at rear of cabin
* Laptop Power .....None
* Bassinets ..........Rows 35, 45, & 58
* Overwing Rows: .Rows 32-47
* Exit Rows: ..........Rows 31, 43, & 53
* IFE ....................Personal 8.4" screen with Audio/Video On Demand technology.

Best/Worst Seats:
36ABC/HJK: Directly behind the curved Pacific Premier bulkhead and have increased legroom.
43ABC/HJK: Exit row, but near toilets. A and K seat legroom impeded by emergency slide pack.
53ABC/HJK: Exit Row, but close to galley which is manned constantly during the night and there will be noise/light. A and K seat legroom impeded by emergency slide pack.
65-67BC&HJ: These seats are right at the rear of the aircraft. Due to the tapering fuselage, there's no 'A' and 'K' seats, which means you have a row of 2 to yourself, and a nice recess between the window and seat to store your stuff. Row 65BC also has the biggest seat pitch in Economy Class, by all of 0.8"! (excluding exit rows)

All Economy Class seats have 34" seat pitch, apart from the following:
48-52HJK (33")
58-60HJK (32")
51-67HJK (33")
54-55ABC (33")
65BC (34.8")
Meal Service:
Usually commences at Row 31 and works down to Row 52, then jumps to Row 68 (rear) and works back up to Row 53. If many passengers miss the first meal choice the second meal service may be done in reverse.

Boeing 777-300 (code: 773)

Configuration: 44 Business / 50 Premium Economy / 244 Economy

The first 777-300 will be delivered in mid December 2010, and will replace the 747s as they arrive.

Business Premier Class
* Capacity............44 Seats (layout 1-2-1). Direct aisle access for all.
* Seat Pitch..........Fully lie-flat (with improved comfort mattress surface.
* Seat Recline.......Fully flat (Bed Length 79.5" - 202cm)
* Seat Width.........22" (33" at shoulder level when reclined)
* Toilets...............2 mid-cabin (with windows!), 1 forward of cabin
* Laptop Power.....Available - most international plugs accepted. USB and iPOD connections available.
* Bassinets ..........9A, 9K.
* IFE ....................Personal 12.1" (30.7cm) touchscreen with Audio/Video On Demand technology.

Best/Worst Seats:
Due to the design of the seats, they all have the same amount of recline, personal space, etc. That said, here are a few pointers..

* Please note that the 2 seats in the middle of the cabin (B and J seats) are angled away from each other at 90 degrees, and are separated by a solid partition. They are NOT suitable for couples travelling together.

* General consensus is that the best idea for couples travelling together is to book seats directly behind each other, rather than across the aisle (ie, 3A and 4A rather than 3A and 3B) It's easier to communicate with each other over the partition, rather than having to shout across the aisle, although you do get a better view of each other from across the aisle.

Row 7A and 7K may be best seats for privacy, as they're at the rear of the cabin. There are toilets and galley behind, so there may be some noise during the night. Row 1 may get some noise or light from the galley during the night. Row 9 is the bassinet row, so there may be babies present. Row 9 is also used for other special category passengers, so a higher risk of being 'bumped'. 9A is the riskiest as it also has the medical power point and oxygen concentrator seating. Row 12 has the Premium Economy bassinet row directly behind, so these are probably less desirable.

___________________________________________

Pacific Premier (Economy Plus) Class
* Capacity............50 Seats (layout 2-2-2)
* Seat Pitch..........N/A ("SpaceSeat" shell design). Beanbag used as footrest.
* Seat Recline.......Moves within its own space to similar to 9" (23cm)
* Seat Width.........20" (50.8cm) between armrests. Individual armrest for each seat, centre seat has centre console for individual armrest of 5.5" at narrowest point to 10" at widest - or combine armrests for one large shared space of 11-20".
* Toilets...............Two rear of cabin.
* Laptop Power.....Available - most international plugs accepted. USB and iPOD connections available.
* Bassinets ..........Row 12 (all seats in this row)
* Exit Rows: ..........N/A
* IFE ....................Personal 10.6" (27cm) touchscreen with Audio/Video On Demand technology.

Best/Worst Seats:

Row 12 is the bassinet row and directly behind the last row of Business Premier (which will be curtained off during the flight). Row 31-32 only have the centre block of 2 seats present, but the toilets are adjacent on either side. Row 32 is also used for special category passengers so a higher risk of reseating. 23-29DE are eligible seats for Wheelchair passengers, a slightly higher risk of reseating if you choose these seats. 23B and 23J will not be able to use the inflight entertainment during taxi, takeoff, landing as the screens must be stowed.

___________________________________________

Economy Class

NOTE: Air NZ offers an exclusive and patented 'Skycouch' in Economy. Customers can purchase a block of three seats that have a 2 position legrest at each seat (60 and 90 degrees) that fold out to create a 'couch' of 5'1". See www.futuretakingflight.com for more details.

* Capacity............244 Seats (layout 3-4-3)
* Seat Pitch..........33" (83.8cm)
* Seat Recline.......6" (15.2cm)
* Seat Width.........17.1" (43.4cm)
* Toilets...............2 mid-cabin, 4 rear of cabin
* Laptop Power.....Available, with USB and iPod connections.
* Bassinets ..........Rows 35 (DE/FG) & Row 48 (all seats)
* SkyCouch..........Rows 37-46ABC/HJK
* Exit Rows: ..........Row 34
* IFE ....................Personal 10.6" (26.9cm) touchscreen with Audio/Video On Demand technology.

Best/Worst Seats:
34AB/JK: Exit row seats in block of 2 rather than 3. Unlimited legroom. BEAR IN MIND: IFE at these seats will not be available during taxi, takeoff, landing as the screen must be stowed.
35AB/HK: Blocks of 2 rather than 3, although bassinet position is adjancent.
36C/H: No seat in front, so legroom should be unlimited. BEAR IN MIND: IFE at these seats will not be available during taxi, takeoff, landing as the screen must be stowed.
48C/H: BEAR IN MIND: IFE at these seats will not be available during taxi, takeoff, landing as the screen must be stowed.
47ABC/HJK: Have an extra inch of seat pitch.
57-59AB/HK: Blocks of 2 rather than 3.

All other things being equal, the following are the seats which are used for passengers of various special requirements (Unaccompanied kids, deportees, oxygen machine users, etc.) You have a greater risk of being 'bumped' from these seats than other regular seats. Row 48 all seats, Row 35DEFG, 57-59JK, 36A, 49A, 58B, 57-59AB.

Boeing 777-200ER (code: 772/777)

Configuration: 26 J / 36 Y+ / 242 Y, 10 cabin crew, 2-3 pilots (dependent on route)

Air NZ has eight 777s, which are the youngest longhaul aircraft in the fleet (all being delivered in 2005/6). They operate throughout the network, currently on AKL-HKG-LHR, some AKL-LAX services, most AKL-SFO services, and various Tasman services.

Business Premier Class

* Capacity............26 Seats (layout 1-2-1)
* Seat Pitch..........Fully lie-flat
* Seat Recline.......Fully flat 6" 7.5"
* Seat Width.........22" (33" at shoulder level when reclined)
* Toilets...............2 rear of cabin, 1 forward of cabin
* Laptop Power.....Available - most international plugs accepted
* Bassinets ..........Row 2
* IFE ....................Personal 10.4" video screen with Audio/Video On Demand technology.

Best/Worst Seats:
Due to the design of the seats, they all have the same amount of recline, personal space, etc. That said, here are a few pointers..

* Please note that the 2 seats in the middle of the cabin (B and J seats) are angled away from each other at 90 degrees, and are separated by a solid partition. They are NOT suitable for couples travelling together.

Row 7A and 7K are the best seats for privacy, as they're at the rear of the cabin. The toilets and Pacific Premier galley are directly behind, so there may be some noise during the night. Row 1 may get some noise or light from the galley during the night.
___________________________________________

Pacific Premier (Economy Plus) Class
* Capacity............36 Seats (layout 3-3-3)
* Seat Pitch..........39-41" (99-104cm)
* Seat Recline.......9" (23cm)
* Seat Width.........17.8" (45cm)
* Toilets...............Two forward of cabin(shared with Business Premier)
* Laptop Power.....Available - most international plugs accepted
* Bassinets ..........Seats 23C & 23H
* Exit Rows: ..........N/A
* IFE ....................Personal 8.4" (21cm) screen with Audio/Video On Demand technology.
Best/Worst Seats:

23C and 23H: Have unlimited legroom due to a shortened bulkhead, but there may be minor disturbance at two points during the flight when crew are maneuvering carts, as there's a 'chicane' shaped aisle there. Possible light shining from the galley during the night. If other passengers are travelling with infants, they will be seated in these rows due to the bassinet fittings.
Row 23 is the bulkhead, but 23DEF have 39" seat pitch, compared to the other rows which all have at least 41".
[B]Seats 23BC/23HK do not have their own power outlets, unlike the other seats.

___________________________________________

Pacific (Economy) Class

* Capacity............242 Seats (layout 3-3-3)
* Seat Pitch..........32"
* Seat Recline.......6"
* Seat Width.........17.8"
* Toilets...............5 mid-cabin, 2 rear of cabin
* Laptop Power.....Not available
* Bassinets ..........Rows 34 & 54
* Overwing Rows: .Rows 34-47
* Exit Rows: ..........Row 53
* IFE ....................Personal 8.4" screen with Audio/Video On Demand technology.
Best/Worst Seats:
40ABC/HJK: There's no window aligned with this row - avoid.
47ABC/HJK: Have an extra inch of seat pitch.
53AB/JK: Exit row seats, and have unlimited legroom (A&K slightly impeded by the emergency slide pack, but not as much as the 747). They're close to the toilets, however light isn't as much of an issue as other aircraft due to the configuration of the toilet doors.
54C and 54H: Also have unlimited legroom as the exit rows in front of them only have 2 seats, however the toilet bulkheads mean the aisle is a slightly curved configuration, which are prone to being accidentally bumped by crew maneuvering carts. For this reason they are listed as 'less desirable', but remember the legroom is unlimited!
65AB/HJ: Groups of 2 seats rather than 3 - however, they're at the rear of the aircraft and there may be some noise from the galley and toilets during the night.
Seats 47ABCHJK, 62ABCHJK, 63ABCHJK are the only seats in economy where the armrests lift up all the way instead of 3/4. However, you will be displaced from these seats if wheelchair or other disabled passengers require them so it is a risk to select them.
All other things being equal, the following are the seats which are used for passengers of various special requirements (Unaccompanied kids, deportees, oxygen machine users, etc.) You have a greater risk of being 'bumped' from these seats than other regular seats. 47ABC, 47F, 47HJK, 55D, 55H, 62ABC, 63ABCHJK, 64ABCHJK, 65JK.

All Economy Class seats have 32" seat pitch, apart from the following:
33-35ABC/HJK (31")
34DEF (31")
47ABC/HJK (33")
59-61ABC/HJK (31")
61-67DEF (31")
Meal Service:
Commences at Row 31 (front of Economy) and works towards the rear. If many passengers miss the first meal choice the second meal service may be done in reverse.

Row 4: Last row - recline may be slightly less. Meal service usually starts from 04AB and 04JK is last.

___________________________________________

Economy (Pacific) Class

* Seat Pitch: 32"
* Seat Recline: 6-7"

Seats 15JK/16JK are crew rest seats. During longhaul sectors these are inside a capsule and are not available for assignment. They are a hybrid business class/economy class seat. IF the aircraft is completely full they will be assigned to passengers on certain Tasman flights, however they can only be assigned at checkin and do NOT have IFE screens of any kind.
Row 10: 10A/B - Increased space (bulkhead with leg cutout. Best seats on the plane).
Row 15: 15A - no window!
Rows 18-19: Exit Row - increased legroom. ROW 18 DOES NOT RECLINE during taxi/takeoff/landing. Row 19 is best.
Row 38: Limited recline?
Row 39-40: Near toilets.

Meal Service: Commences row 7, working down cabin to rear of aircraft (row 40). Note that if passengers miss out on their first choice, second meal service may commence from row 40 and work either back to row 7 or to the final row where passengers missed their first choice, then jumping to row 7 and working back towards that row.

For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move; to feel the needs and hitches of our life more nearly; to come down off this feather-bed of civilisation, and find the globe granite underfoot and strewn with cutting flints.

Very useful - I'm glad I chose 4AB for next years 767 to APW and from NAN flights! Does the food service always start there? No AA style FEBO stuff?

The food service almost always starts at 4AB, but not quite always. I've seen it done in reverse occasionally for the second meal service, but I guess it's up to the crew.

To be fair though, I don't think it really matters where you sit... in six years of serious flying on NZ I've never once not received my first meal choice (and this even though 4K is my favorite seat). And there are no first choices for elites or any nonsense like that. Not sure how NZ do it (my guess is loading lots of meals ) but it's very nice.

In economy (in case anyone is interested) the meal service usually starts at the front, but if a significant number of people down the back aren't getting their fiirst choice then the crew may reverse the service for the next meal (I think they call it a B service). If the flight is continuing on after a stop (eg. LHR-LAX-AKL) and the people at the back haven't gotten their first choices on the first segment, then the ISD may write a note to the crew taking over to serve meals from the back for the second segment. I've seen the ISD do this once on LHR-LAX (was sitting in the "office" at the time) but I'm not sure how often it's done.

Cheers, Zac

You can get seat assignments by contacting NZ directly. A few points to bear in mind..
  • You can't get a seat assignment within 24 hours of the flight departure, as the flight is handed over to flight editing at that time.
  • Certain rows can only be assigned to Star Alliance Gold or Silver members.
  • NZ can only assign you seats if your ticket has the NZ flight number on it. If it has the codeshare flight number (ie, an AC flight number AKL-LAX) it can't be done.
  • A seat assignment is not a guarantee. Your seat could be changed for reasons including but not limited to, aircraft weight and balance, medical passengers, unaccompanied minors, security personnel. This being said, you do get the seat you've requested 99% of the time.
