The New Ultimate Seating Thread, version deux
Boeing 747-400 Refit (code: 74R/744/747)
All 747s in the fleet have now been refitted. They currently operate AKL-HKG-LHR, some AKL-LAX services, and certain Tasman flights.
Configuration: 46 J / 39 Y+ / 294 Y, 14 cabin crew, 2-4 pilots (dependent on route)

Due to the design of the seats, they all have the same amount of recline, personal space, etc. That said, here are a few pointers..
Row 1 (1A/1K) For couples traveling together, 1A and 1K are close together due to being in the nose of the aircraft (the ottomans are almost touching).
Rows 1-7 are in the old First Class section (in the nose) and some travelers have reported a quieter, more exclusive feeling. Row 6 and 7 may be affected by galley noise.
Rows 16-20 are on the upper deck, which results in less engine noise and 'intimate' feel but crew will be accessing flight deck during the night which may cause light disturbance. Premium Economy is also on upper deck, located behind Business.

Row 23 on the Upper Deck is the 'best in house' due to unlimited legroom (emergency exit door is in front) The J/K seats all have 40" pitch, the ABC seats all have 39" pitch except 27ABC, which have 38".
Some passengers like the Lower Deck cabin as it is completely isolated from Business and Economy cabins by bulkheads and curtains (some refer to it as having the atmosphere of a private jet). Note however the Lower Deck does have the bassinet row for families. Of the two Lower Deck cabins, the LEFT cabin (A&C seats) is probably the best - the right cabin (H&K seats) also hosts the entrance to the Flight Manager's office and cart elevator, which is used frequently during the night.

Due to the design of the seats, they all have the same amount of recline, personal space, etc. That said, here are a few pointers..
* Please note that the 2 seats in the middle of the cabin (B and J seats) are angled away from each other at 90 degrees, and are separated by a solid partition. They are NOT suitable for couples travelling together.
* General consensus is that the best idea for couples travelling together is to book seats directly behind each other, rather than across the aisle (ie, 3A and 4A rather than 3A and 3B) It's easier to communicate with each other over the partition, rather than having to shout across the aisle, although you do get a better view of each other from across the aisle.
Row 7A and 7K may be best seats for privacy, as they're at the rear of the cabin. There are toilets and galley behind, so there may be some noise during the night. Row 1 may get some noise or light from the galley during the night. Row 9 is the bassinet row, so there may be babies present. Row 9 is also used for other special category passengers, so a higher risk of being 'bumped'. 9A is the riskiest as it also has the medical power point and oxygen concentrator seating. Row 12 has the Premium Economy bassinet row directly behind, so these are probably less desirable.

The food service almost always starts at 4AB, but not quite always. I've seen it done in reverse occasionally for the second meal service, but I guess it's up to the crew.
To be fair though, I don't think it really matters where you sit... in six years of serious flying on NZ I've never once not received my first meal choice (and this even though 4K is my favorite seat). And there are no first choices for elites or any nonsense like that. Not sure how NZ do it (my guess is loading lots of meals
) but it's very nice.
In economy (in case anyone is interested) the meal service usually starts at the front, but if a significant number of people down the back aren't getting their fiirst choice then the crew may reverse the service for the next meal (I think they call it a B service). If the flight is continuing on after a stop (eg. LHR-LAX-AKL) and the people at the back haven't gotten their first choices on the first segment, then the ISD may write a note to the crew taking over to serve meals from the back for the second segment. I've seen the ISD do this once on LHR-LAX (was sitting in the "office" at the time) but I'm not sure how often it's done.

Airnzboy thank-you for the information. I am flying Air Canada YVR - Lax, Air NZ Lax akl, Akl - per on Dec 3, in Bussiness class using points. Air Canada state I can not have a seat assignment on NZ until check in at LAX. How would I obtain a seat assignment before departure.

You can get seat assignments by contacting NZ directly. A few points to bear in mind..

- You can't get a seat assignment within 24 hours of the flight departure, as the flight is handed over to flight editing at that time.
- Certain rows can only be assigned to Star Alliance Gold or Silver members.
- NZ can only assign you seats if your ticket has the NZ flight number on it. If it has the codeshare flight number (ie, an AC flight number AKL-LAX) it can't be done.
- A seat assignment is not a guarantee. Your seat could be changed for reasons including but not limited to, aircraft weight and balance, medical passengers, unaccompanied minors, security personnel. This being said, you do get the seat you've requested 99% of the time.
