Gay Flyers - Pax In the City - Nov. 9-11 - NYC

(for background on this event, please see this thread)

What, Where:
_____________________________________________
Gay Flyers – Flamingo Fest I – Pax and the City

New York, like its people, only gets stronger when tested. Bring your cash, your camp and your love for the city for a weekend of good times with fellow frequent flyers.

When:
_____________________________________________
Friday, November 9th through Sunday, November 11th, 2001

The Events:
_____________________________________________
(With a warm up on Friday night and a cool down Sunday, we should accommodate those who indicated a desire for a weekend-long event while satisfying those who aimed for a Saturday event.)

------------------------------------------
Friday – The Views

8 – 10 p.m.
Harbor view wine and cheese (tentative and weather-permitting)
Join us on an apartment roof deck right at the southern tip of Manhattan, with sweeping views of New York Harbor. Given the time of year, we may want to keep this inside.

11 p.m. - midnight
View from the Top: Empire State Bldg at Night
Get a deeply discounted admission for a late elevator ride to the top of the island.

Midnight - ?
The View
Yes, that’s the name of the bar. For night owls, head to the heart of Chelsea’s Boystown for a cocktail in this warm and terribly pretty haunt (girls welcome!)

------------------------------------------
Saturday – City Life

11 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Brunch with Family
Bring your credit card for a mileage-earning start to the day at Cafeteria on Fashion Avenue (well, no one really calls 7th Avenue that, but you can dress the part anyway!)

1 – 4 p.m.
Shopping and/or Sightseeing
We’ll make sure you’ve got a local with you on the Circle Line Tour Cruise, or to escort you through some favorite shopping areas. It is your civic duty to buy everything you see.

4 – 6 p.m.
Disco Naps
Time to snooze in preparation for the long evening ahead, or keep shopping and touring. New York will love you either way.

6 – 7 p.m.
Cocktails
We can’t forget the girls! We’ll stop at the Cubby Hole, the hottest West Village lesbian/mixed party going. Very intimate, very comfortable, very “urban girl”.

7 – 11 p.m.
Village Dinner
Earn even more miles at Cent’anni, a Village standard for an early dinner. With seating in small groups, here’s your chance to get to know the new friends you’ve made.

11 p.m. - ?
Dusk and Onwards
Start your Frolic at this very NYC neighborhood bar in Chelsea: chat, play a game of pool, have a Cosmo. Where you take it from there is up to you.

------------------------------------------
Sunday – Recovery

Noon
Brunch with the locals (or, "Auntie Mame is hung")
No miles this morning, but a delicate touch from a handsome crew of waiters to help ease you into your last day at Viceroy, a trendy café in Chelsea.

3 – 5 p.m.
Naked Boys
They’re Singing just for you! We’ll take in this off-Broadway smash in the Village and give you something to take back with you.

5 p.m. and on
Your choice
Catch a flight home or hang around and enjoy the city with your new FT friends.

_____________________________________________
There are plenty of options for restaurants, some gay, some not. Some offer miles, some don’t. Obviously, there are tons of bars too. These are recommendations, many of which have been researched in terms of availability and the ability to accommodate us. As we move closer to a decision, we’ll get a confirmed list of attendees and make more solid plans.

In the meantime, we’re looking for a couple of things…

First, your thoughts on the proposed event: What works? What doesn’t? Better suggestions?

Next, to the locals… Many of you expressed an interest in helping host this event. Please let us know if you’re still up to it by sending email to mailto:[email protected][email protected]</A>. And, like the general invitation to attend this gathering, you don’t have to be gay or lesbian to get involved!

Finally, just a note on the airline/airport event. It may be bad timing to try to gain behind-the-scenes access right now. Maybe this is better kept as an idea for future events. Thoughts?

_____________________________________________

Accomodations: There are gay and lesbian, and gay and lesbian friendly hotels in the city, but they’re too many to list. My favorite, located near most events, is the Chelsea Savoy. Perhaps someone would like to provide other ideas.

The issue of how to pay always comes up and it’s a fair one. We may be able to get around many issues by paying our own way everywhere we go. This is especially helpful for the dining establishments that give miles since many of us will want to collect our own by paying for own meals. More on this issue once we get a better idea of interest and attendance.

On that note, once we sort through some details and finalize a plan for what to do, when and where, we can go back to zoomerang. In this case, it will be helpful for indicating which events you’ll attend, providing any additional information, and identifying any special requests. I think most of you outside the New York area will want to determine your travel plans into the city first, though. Once that’s taken care of, you can commit more easily to things like dinner reservations and tickets.

Kevin,

FYI...the PIP in Provence takes place the same weekend. This may or may not matter anyway. Just presenting the facts.

Also, some of the restaurants in NY won't take more than 3 credit cards when you're in a group. Everyone needs to bring cash. For info on dividing the check, see Punki's post in 'community' around the beginning of September.

Good luck and have fun.

Ooooh! I love Cafeteria! I just recommended it to someone last week when they were looking for great places to go!

This looks like a great mix of activities. Thanks so much for your work on getting this pulled together.

The date's no problem for us (in fact, it's really the only November weekend I have available!), but I don't know how many were planning on PiP.

Kevin,

IMO, the "backstage" access may never ever be attainable, given the current state of things. I wish it weren't that way.

We did get a tour of DFW for our event, but it was scaled back. Same thing with AA Corporate HQ. The Ft. Worth Air Route Traffic Control Center (FAA), who were originally very pleased that they were going to get a group of people who weren't pilots, conditionally canceled, then totally canceled after 9/11.

Any facility which has tours is probably seriously thinking about how much access they will actually grant.

I wish all the young, single heterosexual FT'ers were this well organized.

You guys/gals have fun.

This looks fantastic! Unfortunately, I expect to leave for SFO on Saturday the 10th, so don't expect to be able to join you. I'm afraid if I come just for the Friday night, I won't want to leave! Great work to all.

Count me in. This sounds fantastic. Great job with the itinerary.

I don't think you should worry too much about the other event. This date works.

I will corral some of the other FT "family" and friends.

Keep us posted as things develop!

Arrgh! Of all times for me to be going to Amsterdam & Paris, especially when many of the events will be held in my own neighborhood of Chelsea.

Have a great time -- I'd seriously consider canceling my trip if I weren't taking my sister for her birthday!

Get your sister to change the date of her birthday. Or bring her along - I'm sure we can show her just as wild a time as she would get in Amsterdam.

How many people will we lose due to PIP and the event the following week in Seattle?

Tough decisions here....

Even though I can't attend, IMHO, I do think that we needed to get this up and running and therefore needed to strike while the iron was on Linen and Steam settings. I agree that in the future we should do all we can to ensure that overlap with other FT events is kept to a minimum. On the other hand, it's nice to give people a choice of events that allows them to attend the one(s) that best fit their schedules or venue choices.

I was going to say we could just let the organizers charge it, but then I saw the Dining For Miles listing! Ahhh, what the hell - we can spare the miles for their willingness and time to put this together, right?

I followed the GAY FT thread carefully and with a lot of sympathie ...and I'd be more than happy to participate in the NYC event, but please be aware, that those dates just some weeks ahead, are way too close to fit everybodys plans .. especially if one would need to get there from overseas.
The schedule looks GREAT, but ....

Sounds great, but I'll just have come back home to SFO from a RTW, so I can't make it to NYC.

Sorry!
