KrisFlyer Devaluation - 23 March 2017

From the SQ website:

Important Changes to Flight Redemption

Following a recent review, we will be making the following changes that will be effective for redemption and redemption upgrade bookings, ticketed on/after 23 March 2017.
Revisions to Saver Award levels in the Singapore Airlines and SilkAir Award Chart have been made to ensure that flight rewards remain sustainable yet competitive. We last made adjustments to award levels in various zones in 2012.

The 15% discount for redemption and redemption upgrade bookings made through singaporeair.com and the SingaporeAir app will be discontinued, and the same redemption fare will be applied across all channels.

Fuel and insurance surcharges from all redemption award tickets on Singapore Airlines and SilkAir operated flights will be removed.

View the Revised Award Chart, effective from 23 March 2017
View the Current Award Chart

Importantly, with this change, while there will be an increase in the number of miles required to redeem for flights in certain zones, you can also expect to enjoy savings in the amount of cash you would need to pay for your redemption ticket due to the removal of fuel and insurance surcharges.

Hmmm .... More points, no online discount, in exchange of high fuel surcharges ......

Also reported in AusBT:

I have just done a comparison for my ticketed award flights this year (all one-way, including 15% discount for booking online currently):

SQ J MEL-SIN-HND
Before 27 March: 65875 KF miles + taxes + AUD$207 Airline Fuel and Insurance Surcharge
After 27 March: 83000 KF miles + taxes

So difference is 17125 KF miles vs AUD$207.

SQ J HKG-SIN-SYD
Before 27 March: 46750 KF miles + taxes + HKD$940 Airline Fuel and Insurance Surcharge
After 27 March: 58000 KF miles + taxes

So difference is 11250 KF miles vs HKD$940 or AUD$158.

SQ R/F HKG-SIN-SYD
Before 27 March: 63750 KF miles + taxes + HKD$1056 Airline Fuel and Insurance Surcharge
After 27 March: 80000 KF miles + taxes

So difference is 16250 KF miles vs HKD$1056 or AUD$177.50.

I think I prefer the current system, thanks.

Thanks for showing the comparisons.

I thought SQ has BA sized monster surcharges.

Nice they took something away.

But you've got 3 weeks for the old price bookings. Go go go

Not ideal but I am pleased with the end of the surcharges. The last SQ booking departed MNL to avoid the surcharges. The surcharges exceeded the flight to Manila and the hotel for the night.

Honestly, the take away of the 15% booking sucks!

They've made it 15% more expensive in points - which is massive for J and F bookings.

I'll look to other airlines thanks.

17.6% actually. And that's without accounting for the increased rates.

More to the point, that email fails to mention how availability will remain as pathetically scarce as always.

If someone wanted the math too,

Sin-fra-jfk OW suites
Before: 110k -15% = 93.5k + SGD$348 YQ (usd$250) + SGD$130taxes

New: 120k (increase of 26.5k) but no YQ

26.5k miles is worth more than USD$250

Also, I don't see south America on the new chart?

Overall, redemptions need more miles(due to fewer suites seats), and redeeming for economy makes more sense with no YQ(lowering demand for suites ?)?

they vanished all the Saver space after 23 March. It's all waitlist now. And to enjoy the current chart, you need to ticket before 23 March. Go figure

No more YQ on paid flights... Base fare will include everything but taxes

I wonder which airline will follow suit...

Q15: Aside from changes to redemption flights, it has also been announced that fuel and insurance surcharges will be folded-into the base airfares of commercial tickets on Singapore Airlines/SilkAir flights. What is this about?

Today, tickets involving Singapore Airlines/SilkAir flight sectors include a separate fuel and insurance surcharge component. Together with the base airfares and other applicable taxes, fees and charges, they make up the total price payable by a customer (“all-in fare”).

With the folding in of fuel and insurance surcharges, which will be implemented progressively across the Singapore Airlines and SilkAir network starting from 28 March 2017, you will be presented with a single base airfare when purchasing tickets. This will provide our customers with a more simplified fare structure.
