Business fares cheaper than economy???

I was looking to book a flight last week from Canada to the US on short notice (2 days out) and was surprised to see that the business fares were actually cheaper than economy (there was no tango left, just flex and latitude). I'll admit that I don't fly business class very often, but is this common?

I'd say it's not entirely uncommon to see discounted business class fares (P fares) in the same price range as high-Flex fares (H, U, M) on mid-haul TB routes, but it's extremely route-dependent.

And it's not unheard of to see P fares cheaper than Tango.

This was a route that I've never flown before, so that may explain why I'd never seen this before. It's certainly something I will watch for in the future!

It's pretty common to have P lower than PY/Flex and PY lower than Flex. This is route dependent, but can be a mistake fare as well.

It is likely that economy was oversold.

If economy is oversold, there should be only Y fare left I suppose? OP said it's flex.

This is not a reasonable statement.

When I started flying in the early 2000s it was this case as well and I haven't seen it change much since then in terms of what you are seeing.

But then it's not uncommon that if you look carefully, it says "Tango P" or "Tango Z." And sits you in front.

Last minute (or during busy seasons) I've seen this happen a LOT on YVR - YWG and YVR - PHX.

Used to see this plenty on YYC-IAH. Not like business was much cheaper, but Flex for $1151 and business for $1131, that kind of thing. The oil crash has largely killed that though, I think.

I'm wondering if the oil crash is going to kill YYC - IAH.

I had a P fare for a flight just last week, YOW-PHX (yes, Rouge), that was lower on the date of sale than Flex fares. I bought my ticket about three weeks before the trip.
