SQ Upcoming Premium Economy

SQ is introducing Premium Economy this year, August.

I can't wait apparently the first flight will be on SQ221/SQ222 which is SIN-SYD route. This will be available on A380/B777-300ER

I heard it first on Australian Business Traveller website below:

Probably 3-3-3 in the A380 where Economy is 10-abreast on the lower deck.

It doesn't seem to be going on upper deck with 36 seats though...?

For the 77W it seems like 2-3-2, which will be two seats less abreast vs economy. Which will fit 4 rows on the 28 seats as rumoured by GDS.

My only question / worry is - how will these changes affect award redemption rates for Business / First? Hopefully it won't go up much or won't change at all.

The images are sourced from the SQ website directly. Here's the 77W: http://www.singaporeair.com/images/A...00ER4class.jpg

Here's the A380: http://www.singaporeair.com/images/A...0-maindeck.jpg

The images are huge so I scaled them down to compare. Also, the website has a bad URL in its code for the 77W so I had to suss that out. Turns out it wasn't too difficult.

It will be 2-4-2 on both the A380 (main deck, just aft of Suites) and on the 77W (between C/Y). On the A380 there are more "2" seats than "4" seats; it is the opposite on the 77W.

ETA: Here are scaled versions of the image which fit on FT; full size on the blog or by clicking the images below:

A380

77W

Ha. I was also trying to do that earlier, but I couldn't figure it out and gave up. Thanks for the clarification!

Almost gave myself a heart attack as I thought I saw 10-abreast economy on the 77W (it was the A380)

I'm finding it a bit odd they are fitting 2-4-2 on A380s, but that probably means the A380 seats will be a little bit wider than the 77Ws.

Anyway, it seems a little trawling on Google found this.

http://www.singaporeair.com/pdf/csd/...R941_TR957.pdf

Not very important to a non-drinker like me, but I guess this might intrigue people as to what will be expected to be poured in Premium Economy (though still not very helpful).

Or maybe the aisles will be a bit wider... :P

I'd imagine it would be a bit annoying be stuck in the middle seat in a four-seat middle section in PEY instead of the middle of a three-seat middle section in Y on the 77W, though.

I can't call a judgement about that. After all, in a 2-4-2 PEY, you'll have no one saying "excuse me" twice compared to the 3-3-3 Y. Seats are wider too so even if you are in the two inner middle seats, they don't seem as bad.

I would be intrigued about whether SQ will go with removing the middle row of overhead baggage stowing areas as they have done in all their other J and F section of the cabins. If that's the case, I'd rather be in a PEY middle seat than in any of the window seat in Y (except the bulkhead!).

Somehow I cannot see how could it be cost efficient to introduce the new PE product (e.g. marketing, product development and maintenance costs), considering that there are less than 40 PE seats in each plane (i.e. less than business class) and these seats generate less revenue than business class.

Well, it seems to work for CX, LH and VS (and possibly nearly everyone else doing PEY, I haven't checked), so I think SQ should be just fine with this.
