I'm am going to be in Amman for a sub 24 hour (but still overnight) connection. I will have pretty much one full afternoon and evening in town. What sites should one see, keeping in mind this must all be jammed into one day. I plan to eventually come back to Jordan to see Petra, but just the quick and easy Amman tour for now please, thanks

Tons of things to do in Amman:

During the day you can see:
1. Roman Ruins (the Citadel, Amphitheater, ancient Basilica, etc.)
2. Archaeological museums
3. Royal Automobile Museum
4. Shop at Souk Jara or Sweifeih Market
5. If you are adventurous, you can take a 30-40 minute car ride to the Dead Sea and/or Baptism Site at the Jordan River

Food:
1. Hashem (old city) - for typical breakfast and/or late night post-drinking meal of hummus, salads, falafels, french fries, etc. Old school but lots of fun
2. Fakhr al-Din (First Circle) - probably the best kabobs in town
3. Reem Shawarma (Second Circle)

Entertainment
1. Tons of bars/pubs in the city
2. Rainbow Street for people watching - this is where the young adults congregate at night
3. You can catch an excellent meal/drinks/hookah at any of the cafes or restaurants in town

PM me with more specific questions. Enjoy Jordan!

Roughly how long would you budget to see those sights? I am all set on restaurants/nightlife.

You don't specify the exact hours you have, so it is hard to answer.

I would say that the the Roman ruins in Jerash, 30 miles north of Amman, are a lot more interesting than the Citadel in Amman, should you not have time to do both.

The baptism site can be time-consuming -- you can't go on your own, instead they have guided tours every few hours -- so it might not work but is interesting if you have the time.

You could do the dead sea -- the public access beach is good. Dead Sea and Jerash would probably be tight.
