I will be arriving in MUC 10am and leave the same day at 10pm in mid-Dec. I plan to explore the city of Munich during the layover. Any suggestions on what places should I go? Here are the places on my list right now:
Deutsches Museum
BMW Welt
Residenz
Do I have enough time to explore all three places? I am traveling solo and I plan to store my carry-on at Kempinski MUC (already reserved a day room there). Thanks!

I would only do one of the above. If you figure in that transportation to the city takes about one hour from arrival, you effectively have one afternoon. If you want to see everything in the Deutsches Museum, you need to spend several days, and even a short, cursory visit will take several (3-4) hours.Originally Posted by mediator

I think combining the Deutsches Museum with a stroll through the pedestrian zone and around the Residenz is perhaps the best (it is nice inside, but I think you get a good impression by just walking around it). Adjust your plans depending on weather and on whether you like the pedestrian zone (which is pretty in winter time).
BMW Welt is next to the Olympiazentrum, far away from the city, and getting there by public transportation will add quite some additional time to your time spent in subways.

This is excellent advice. A beer and brat at the market and your day is complete.Originally Posted by cygnus

Hit up the Christmas Markets! The Middle Ages one in Wittelsbacherplatz is my favorite. If you go, be sure to try the Heißer Met and Glühbier.

You very likely will not find free WiFi if that's what you are asking.

I agree with the other posters, that all three are too much. Keep in mind that transportation exhibits of the Deutsches Museum are not at the main museum at the downtown Museumsinsel, but at the Verkehrszentrum at Theresienhöhe, a distance away. If your main interest is cars (guessing from your wish to see the BMW Welt), you should head for Theresienhöhe, and not the main Deutsches Museum (I would NOT do both in one day)Originally Posted by mediator

The exhibits are usually open only until 5PM; so go to the museum first. A good plan would be to take the S-Bahn from the airport to Hackerbrücke (the stop before or after Hauptbahnhof (Hbf), depending on whether you take S1 or S8 from the airport), and walk 15 minutes uphill, or get off at Hbf and change to U4/U5 for Schwantalerhöhe (probably more convenient). After seeing the museum, I would take U4/U5 back to Odeonsplatz for seeing the Rezidenz and the downtown Christmas markets. Marienplatz is a bit closer to the markets (and that's where you'll be taking the train back to the airport from), but the change of lines is not worth the extra hassle.
(If you want to go to the main Deutsches Museum on Museumsinsel, Isartor is the S-Bahn station)
As for tickets, the Airport day ticket as mentioned is by far the cheapest and will cover all public transportation needed.
With your busy schedule, I do not really see the need for an expensive day room. There is luggage storage at the airport. If having lounge access in transit, showers could be available there.

The Airport-City Day Ticket now costs €11.20 for one person and a real bargain at €20.40 for up to 5 people travelling together. The ticket machine at the airport takes credit cards and displays instructions in English but I couldn't figure out how to buy a day ticket. The secret turned out to be to touch the MVV logo in the bottom righthand corner of the screen.
P.S. MVV website says the Airport-City Day Ticket costs €11.20 but I just checked my credit card receipt and it was for €11.00 (two weeks ago).

Starbucks in Munich offered WIFI. (Probably still do.) You'll be hard pressed to make it downtown before 11:30, so I agree that you'll want to limit your expectations. The medieval Christmas market really is cool and worth a visit.
