Tokyo Narita to Jakarta (NRT-CGK) on Japan Airlines operated by JALWays 777-200 business class

A short night in a real bed and I'm once again heading back to the airport. Yes my time spent landside this trip is all too brief.

I use the first class check in and am quickly checked in for this flight, but not for the onward flight

The addition of Japan Airlines (and several of it's subsidiaries) to One World has opened up some new long routes, including this gem for those crediting to Qantas Frequent Flyer (since the distance is over 3600 miles).

Unlike most airports security is before immigration. Small wait at both. The JL first class lounge is right in front of immigration, and my gate is close. I had hoped to check out the new Qantas lounge at NRT but unfortunately it is not open in the morning. Inside the lounge I try again to check in for the onward flight, but get the same result.

The lounge is, apparently, newly renovated and expanded. Since I haven't visited the older and smaller version of the lounge I am not sure what has changed. I'll post some more about the lounge later, but first back to the flight.

When it is time to board I head out to the gate. There is a special boarding lane for premium and elite pax. Boarding is fairly quick. In business class it looks like everyone has an empty seat alongside.

No pre departure drink is offered. However, slippers and a shoe horn are sitting in the seat pocket and a basket is brought around offering ear plugs, eye mask, moist towel for the eyes, and moist face mask. The pillow is small and the headset poor quality (as far as I could tell identical to the headset used by Qantas domestic economy for example).

The seat is like Singapore Airline's oldest business class seat - ie manual seat controls, limited recline, foot rest only comes up a short way, flip out small(ish) personal tv.

We pushback on time but taxi is very slow, plus a lengthy hold for ATC clearance. So the takeoff roll is about 45 minutes after scheduled departure.

For taxi and takeoff the nosecam is showing on the bulkhead screens ^

Once we have eased out of the inital climb a (not very) moist towel is handed out together with the menu. The menu orders are taken and instead of writing down on a pad like most airlines, a sticker with symbol is put on the top of the seat back.

The in flight entertainment is avod (audio video on demand) with a modest selection of movies, games etc. There are no regular tv shows though, at least I couldn't find any. As is my custom I used the screen for the seat next to mine to show the flight path while I watched some movies on my own screen.

I liked the Japanese meal option - it is better than Singapore Airline's hanagoyomi for example, in my view. The sake went down rather well too.

I wasn't too sure what to expect with this JALWays flight, but the service was very good and I'm looking forward to future flights with them.

We lose some more time en route due to headwinds and a couple of large detours (I presume to avoid thunderstorms although I didn't notice any turbulence).

In transit in Jakarta

I have done turnarounds at Jakarta before, but until now I'd always been able to check in for the return flight at origin - deliberately, to avoid the hassle I'm about to face.

On arrival I walk past the visa on arrival and head for the transfer desk. The transfer desk cannot actually check anyone in, but one agent escorted me through transfer security (with no need to put my carry on in the xray) and then through outward immigration the wrong way to the check in desks. Check in was of course not yet open for the return flight leaves several hours later due to the curfew at Narita. So back through immigration and I am left to cool my heels for a couple of hours.

I'd earlier checked that the Pura Indah contract lounge is used by JALWays and so entered on the basis of my frequent flyer card alone. If that had failed I might have tried the Esplanade lounge next door and hope to get one of the friendly agents on the desk who recognised me from my many turnarounds on Singapore Airlines. Anyway I can catch up on my email and some FT.

Later when check in has opened I made my way back through outward immigration the wrong way and escorted to check in. The immigration officer leaves me and trusts the check in agents will escort me back through immigration once checked in. This they do. The officer then scribbled on my boarding pass to indicate I did not need to pay departure tax. This is interesting - every time I did a turnaround on Singapore Airlines I had to pay departure tax at the gate. We'll see if the gate agent decides I need to pay it or not.

Then, having entered and left Indonesia twice without any paperwork or visas, I relax in the lounge to await boarding. Check in actually gave me an invite card for the Premier Lounge which is right next door to Pura Indah, but as it looked busier there (from the view at the entrance) and the Pura Indah was almost deserted I decided to stay with my original choice of lounge. I'm not sure if the amenities are any better (probably not materially) or the food/drink is better (quite possible - it is a bit dire in Pura Indah albeit still much better than any Red Carpet Club for example).

A couple of minutes later the check in agent came into the lounge to give me 3 more boarding passes (making 4 in total). Great - that will save some time in the upcoming transits.

The computer tests my touch typing skills as the lettering on the keyboard has almost totally worn off. It also has an annoying habit of logging me out of FT from time to time for no obvious reason.

As I prepare to embark on yet another overnight flight I realise I'll cross 50,000 miles since the start of this report in just 1 1/2 weeks. Not my fastest 50,000 miles, but with considerably more flying in the next 2 1/2 weeks I am not even close to halfway on this report ( ). So far I'm not doing too badly keeping up with the constantly changing time zones and mostly sleeping at the right local times. I'm soon going to need another book, but at least this trip I'm not carrying extras that I don't end up reading. I think I'll need something to amuse me when I get yet more screenings of Evan Almighty - any ideas?

Sorry about the interruption. Boarding was called. The load must have been extremely light as by the time I made the short distance from lounge to gate (we had the 2nd closest gate) there was no passenger to be seen. The terminal itself was almost deserted for the next flight is not for several more hours. Security at the gate was quick. No request to pay the departure tax. Hop onboard to find business class has all of 7 passengers, including me. Wow - unless they had lots of cargo these 2 flights could easily have been cancelled with loads this low.

Again no pre-departure drink. The amenities that were in a basket the previous flight are now in a small kit bag. I also get a survey to fill out (as do about half the business class passengers), which is a bit odd as there are no spaces for comments. This doesn't stop me scrawling my thoughts though

Food is a light snack just after takeoff and breakfast about 80 minutes before landing.

I manage to get a few hours sleep on the red-eye, waking up just as they're serving breakfast.

The flight was fairly smooth with just some very minor bumps coming out of the jetstream and again when passing through a small layer of broken cloud on final descent. For the first time in ages the sky is clear enough to see Mount Fuji - albeit from a distance much further than my regular viewing of The Last Samurai movie stand-in Mount Taranaki.

Again a long taxi on arrival, but we still arrive ahead of schedule.

As we pulled up to the satellite terminal I was faced with a choice - do I transfer to the main terminal before or after going through transfer security? Given the early hour I wasn't even sure if transfer security was open yet so I decided to try it in the satellite terminal trusting that I could get into the main terminal airside. (The reason for this is that while JL has a lounge in the satellite terminal, the first class lounge is in the main terminal.)

Transfer security is open, with the staff looking very bored - I'm possibly the first passenger through this today. Then off to the train to the main terminal. The first 2 trains are being used for arrivals, but the wait for the 3rd train being used for airside transfers is only a few minutes. Once across and upstairs I have a wait until the lounge opens at 0730.

The lounge is quite nice but gets rather busy. The showers are great - certainly in my top 3 best lounge showers. I grab a coffee while catching up on email and FT. There are 2 terminals plus of course plenty of ports to plug in your laptop. No printer though The lounge has massage rooms, massage chairs, sleeper rooms, a smoking room, a small library, and the usual comfy chairs, food & drink (yes beer machine too), dining area etc.

Oh, and upon request I checked the champagne on offer. It is Domaine Machaud.

Tokyo Narita to Singapore (NRT-SIN) on Japan Airlines 747-400 business class

When it is time I head back to the satellite terminal. I'd allowed 10 minutes to reach my gate which was more than ample. I thought about visiting the Sakura Lounge in the satellite terminal, but decided not to - instead stretching my legs while I waited for boarding.

I thought I was going to get an empty seat beside me on this flight too, but one of the very last passengers to board got that seat. Never mind. The seat is much the same as the Qantas skybed. The IFE was an older version of the same system I had on the earlier flights - had about 8 or 12 less options but was otherwise the same.

We had a very long taxi to the far runway, and so slow that despite pushing back on time we only took off about an hour after scheduled departure. Fortunately the schedule is a bit padded, but when we had a zig-zag course down the Malaysian peninsula to arrive at Singapore we ended up being a bit late.

Singapore to Melbourne on Qantas 747-400 business class

The delivery flight for SQ's first A380 (and the first for any airline) was due to arrive today, but I was unsure what time. I thought it may have arrived already (for it was now early evening) and so I looked out for it when we landed and taxiied, with no sighting. As I had a bit of time before my onward flight I decided to wander across to T2 and check out the A380 gates. Again no sighting. On the way back to T1 I noticed the skytrain for T3 was now operating openly in test mode, albeit with no passengers allowed.

At the nice Qantas lounge I had a shower and then just enough time to check/sample the champagne (Joseph Perrier) and my messages before heading out to the gate. Through security quickly and past the passport check. At the gate desk they were checking boarding passes manually rather than scanning them in. The agent took a long time looking at my record. Was this to be an op up? (I'd previously noted the availability looked like the flight was oversold.) Alas, after an unreasonably long pause, it wasn't to be but I'm of course happy that I'm not stuck in a middle seat way down the back. Boarding was chaotic. Despite only calling for the very last economy rows (plus elites/premium pax free to board at any time) there were 2 huge queues with nearly everyone standing in them. It took a fiesty agent to fight her way through the mob and lead the passengers who had just come from the lounge.

A quick pre-takeoff drink. Breakfast orders are taken before departure and water bottles handed out. With the flight time expected to be a short 6 1/2 hours I am glad the dinner service is quick. As is my habit on such flights (when I had insufficient time to eat in the lounge) I have the first course of dinner and skip breakfast in order to maximise sleep.

The service is a bit off. No amenity kits handed out (to anyone). Some seats (including mine) missing menus on boarding. I was never addressed by name in the entire flight. Unusually for QF there was also no visit by the CSM. The dinner service was erratic - not everyone got offered everything they should have. No hot towel before landing. This is a recurring problem with Qantas, in my view - when they are good they can be great, but sometimes they do disappoint.

On arrival the door 1L is open very quickly and I walk fast to immigration, trying hard not to stumble along the way due to my bleary vision and sleepiness. Quickly through and no questions about my short stay here. Then I'm first through xray and one of the first through domestic xray (no need to take liquid baggy out ^ ). I wasn't sure the domestic Qantas Club would be open this early (for it is still not yet 5am), but they were. After checking in for 2 more flights I grab a shower before getting a coffee and checking out FT.

How I've been getting off
Melbourne to Cairns (MEL-CNS) on Qantas 767-300 business class

The lounge steadily fills and them partially empties as the peak business travel period comes and goes. There is a small delay in boarding while someone is preboarded, but even so we are fully boarded in 15 minutes and ready to go on time. There was no priority boarding but it worked okay. There were very strong winds buffeting the airbridge and a/c. Fortunately once we climbed a short distance we got clear of it and a fairly smooth ride.

I'd chose this flight for a few reasons - it is a new route for me, is zone 3 for all important status credits, is one of the few longer domestic Australia flights that are not on the xONEx restricted list (only one of which can be flown), and the schedule works out brilliantly between my international flights to and from Australia.

As serfty alludes we get a domestic config 767, and a rather worn out one at that.

A pre departure drink (water or orange juice). An early lunch is served, which I treat as brunch. No menu on domestic flights, but it is a choice of salmon salad or chicken with tomato sauce, plus green salad, roll, drinks, ice cream.

Nice views almost all the way.

The IFE is Live Free or Die Hard, followed by some music videos (the same ones I've seen dozens of times on Qantas domestic flights in New Zealand).

Despite the headwinds we arrive in Cairns on time, only to wait for 15 minutes for the Virgin Blue aircraft to vacate our gate. This time we get the left hand side arrival passage and as I double back towards security I got yelled at by an agent that luggage claim for Qantas is the other way.
