You're not a moron! Most promo codes on the NEC include the following restriction:
... not valid on the NEC for departures between (IIRC) 11 AM and 7 PM on Friday and Sunday ...
November 16 is Friday, November 18 is Sunday! So If you are
departing between the restricted hours, you can not use the discount!
If this is the case, if possible (and those times are correct), instead of taking a 11:05 AM train, take the 10 AM departure! Or instead of taking the 6:30 PM train, take the 7:15 PM train!
(I just made up those train times - but you get the idea.)
Also don't forget that a R/T on Amtrak costs the same as 2 O/W tickets, so book 2 O/W tickets - especially if 1 is in the restricted time and the other is not!
