Am planning on a couple of nights in Stockholm prior to a cruise.
Have read conflicting stories about the Grand. Looking at the prices of the Grand, they seem to go for about $340 per night for a "standard" room and over $500 per night for a harbor view room.
Does any have any suggestions about great "boutique" type hotels? Not stuck on a boutique hotel just something that is very good.
Hard to know exactly what you're looking for but you won't find a real luxury hotel in Stockholm. You might enjoy the Victory on Gamla Stan (full of naval antiques) or the Rival at Mariatorget (hip boutique hotel owned by Benny Anderson). Best to check the Scandinavian forum.
Two other hotels on Gamla Stan at which I have stayed are the Lady Hamilton, which I believe is under the same ownership as the Victory and the Lord Nelson (I've not stayed at either of those), and the First Hotel Reisen. The Lady Hamilton is in the center of Gamla Stan, while the First Hotel Reisen is on the eastern waterfront, with a view toward Skeppsholmen island. Rooms at the Lady Hamilton seemed a bit on the small side. The Reisen has a variety of room types, some quite small but others more capacious. The Lady Hamilton has lots of character, and puts you in the middle of things. Superior and above rooms at the Reisen offer water views, but can be a bit noisy with the a main street between the hotel and the water. If I remember correctly, the buffet breakfasts at each hotel were excellent.
Grand Hotel - the city's most luxurious hotel, but pricey...
Sheraton - newly renovated and right next to the central station...
Rival - cool ABBA-hotel, but not in the centre...
Scandic Anglais - new and nice, great location...
It is just a few steps away from The Grand. Large rooms/suites and great views. There was a bit of construction going on the facade when I was there last (Feb. '08), but I would assume it is finished by now. That would be my recommendation...
The Grand, to me, is a bit tired. The Suites are OK, and the common areas and views are nice, but the rest is ho hum in my opinion.
Good luck.

In stockholm I've stayed at the Scandic by the train station a few times and found that to be a good choice. I've stayed at other hotels and found their rooms just as small. The Scandic has free breakfast so if your there to see Stockholm then I can recommend.

That is the Scandic Continental right across from the main train station.
The three Scandic hotels that I use most frequently around Stockholm are the Scandic Anglais, Scandic Contiental and Scandic Sergel Plaza. The Scandic Anglais is more "hip" ever since its complete gutting and renovation.
Rival is pretty "hip" too, but that's in Sodermalm section of Stockholm and a wee bit further away from the main tourist spots (although it's convenient and quick from there by subway to the main tourist stops).

The interior decoration in the Hilton Slussen gives me vertigo. Also the rooms are tiny. I am not entranced by any Stockholm hotel I've ever stayed in, however. I've heard that the previously dumpy Grand was remodeled and was tempted to try it when I'm in town next month -- but the rack rates are ridiculous. Anyone got a good lead for a decent rate? Is it IC now, so I might get upgraded due to Ambassador status? Thanks.
