I havenīt stayed at hotel stureplan, but the location is great. Itīs right in the middle of upscale shopping and bar area. Within minutes youīre in most of downtown Stockholm. Itīs a bit further from Gamla Stan, but still walking distance. I simply cannoīt believe any Scandic is worth double the price of that place.

I'll be in Stockholm the last week of July, for a conference at the Stockholm City Conference Centre (Barnhusgatan 12-13). Ideally, I'd like a hotel that is very close, has comfortable rooms with drawers for storing clothes and such, and has a nice long pool for swimming laps for exercise.
From searching around, reading TripAdvisor, and calling a few hotels, it looks like no one has a pool that's good for laps. A few hotels suggested walking to Centralbadet, but I emailed them and they said their pool is too small for laps (and is closed two days a week). The Clarion Sign has a pool, but they said it is only 10 meters and also is an extra charge, but that might be better than nothing.
From TripAdvisor, it seems that many people dislike the SAS Royal Viking, which is also a bit farther from the conference centre. The Clarion Sign has mixed reviews, possibly because some rooms are nice and some are awful, but I'm not sure.
I have a refundable reservation for a Superior room at the Scandic Norra Bantorget for 1290kr, and could get a non-refundable Superior room at the Clarion Sign for 1603kr.
Hotels in Stockholm are not too good, IMO. Stayed for two weeks at Clarion Sign, and the suites are nice. But the pool is not really a great lap pool It can be used for exercise, but not ideal.
Stayed at the Grand and several others, but not impressed with amenities like pool or gym.

Any advice, suggestions, etc. would be welcome.
If you really need to stay close to the convention centre (note that no hotel in central Stockholm will be more then 8-10 minutes and $ 15 to Barnhusgatan, its vacation times with no traffic).
Although I don’t give much for any of the hotels in that area (to much city and no atmosphere, you should consider other locations I think) I’d go for Clarion Sign. Stay out of Scandic Norra Bantorget. A more boring street then Wallingatan is difficult to find. I know that they refurnished a while a go but still I wouldn’t recommend the place.
I find it very strange that you couldn’t do laps in Centralbadet. The pool is 25 yard. Have done it several times, nice place.
If swimming is your game perhaps you should try the other Clarion on the south side. Then you have the largest swimming stadium in Stockholm with both in and outdoor 60 yard lanes at the footstep of the hotel.

Thanks very much for the information. I ended up booking a room at the Clarion Sign (which promises to be "across the street" from the conference center). I'd rather stay in a more fun part of the city and one with a better swimming pool, but I really want to be able to pop into my room during breaks in the meetings.
After reading many TripAdviser comments on the Scandic (which is attached to the conference center) I decided against them. Many people commented that the walls are very thin (they used to be a Best Western).
In case anyone else is interested, the Clarion Sign says their pool is 11x4 meters and costs 150kr; the SAS Royal Viking says their pool is 10x10 meters, and the Centralbadet says theirs is 23.7 meters, but they are closed Sunday and Monday during the summer, so I'll try and find another pool then.
