Is prior seat selection even possible on my upcoming SAS CPH-FCO flight?
When I entered my res# it just brought up the itinerary. I am mostly concerned about being able to sit next to my traveling companion, but scoring an exit row for these long legs wouldn't hurt either.
I did have to book in danish, it was cheaper for some reason.

Unless your *G, no. However, you can check-in on the internet 22 hours before departure and pick your seat there
I wouldn't worry about not getting next to your traveling companion anyway, especially if your're on the same itinary
If you are on the same itinerary the system will automatically seat you next to each other (if two adjoining seats are available) at departure -4hrs. But as pointed out do use OLCI from departure -22hrs to pick seats.
This applies for Economy Class only where you need *G-card to do ASR on short haul as on most airlines.
In Business/Economy Extra you may do ASR regardless.
Note that you can not pick/change seats in Economy Class using OLCI when passing the departure -4hrs mark.
Can anyone (without EBP...) confirm that this stupid rule is still in effect??

Yep, the stupid rule is still in effect. I checked in using the Self Service check-in at ARN about 2 hours prior to departure and I was not given the option to select seats for me and my 2 year old daughter. And of course the pre-automated seating had given us seats at an exit row, where children are not allowed to sit, so at the gate my daughter's boarding card was given a red light and the gate agent gave her another seat (not next to mine). I kindly pointed out that a 2 year old child should be seated next to her travelling companion (=me) and the gate agent realised his mistake and gave us both two new seats. The flight was half-empty so it was not a problem, but if the flight had been full it would indeed had caused some shuffle around...
I'm relatively new on SK, and wonder about the following: I understand that pre-selection of Y-seats is available to EB-Golds. Is that also an advantage available to other *A Golds? We're *A Gold with BMI, and that would be a terrific advantage.
Thanks.

As a BD*G I've always been able to do ASR on SAS and Blue1 also on economy class

ASR in short haul Economy Class is indeed a *G-benefit at SAS.
Do OLCI (mainly to pick good seats) and when at the airport go to a CI kiosk that can print out luggage tags, attach those and proceed to the baggage drop counter.
Maybe I am missing something, but what is the advantage of having automated seating 4 hours prior departure for SAS as a company?
This puzzles most people here, but is said to make it easier for the flight manager and gate agents when lowly M-class pax without status doesnīt move around last minute.
Me personally doesnīt agree as many partys these days are travelling on separate bookings and the system is therefore not able to make a proper seat allocation -4 hrs. This means a lot of upset pax has to deal with this at the gate. And many pax gets the nonsense reply "Try to solve it on board"...

Then again... I don't think there is anything that needs to be solved - at least if small children are not involved. This is especially true with couples - if you are planning to spend the rest of your life with someone, a few hours apart hardly makes difference.

I totally not agree with you. When a family/elderly couple/friends (who maybe doesnīt fly too often and havnīt been able to OLCI) comes to the airport 2-3 hours prior to flight and discovers that they are seated at different ends of the aircraft and that it canīt be corrected, not by an agent, not by themselves at a kiosk, THAT is bad service from SAS.
Rather than starting a new thread, I figured I'd resurrect this one.
As a *G, I've just been told by two call center agents that ASR in shorthaul economy is not possible. Are they right, or should I try calling again?
Edit: to answer my own question, it seems that it's still possible. I called back, got the same agent as the first time, and it worked out this time.
You were lucky when you called back. The first two call centers were, unfortunately, correct. See this post (and my post immediately preceding it): Can you 'book' your seats in advance with SK?
Officially, *G cannot pre-reserve short-haul economy seats, only EBG.
