The way I am planning it now we have 4 hours at LHR on the way out and 3 hours coming back.
4 hours should be plenty, even for the insurance company if you are delayed. Just make sure you have a good travel insurance, and call them and ask how much time you need between the flights when you are on separate tickets. One of my (Norwegian) travel insurances states at least 90 min, does not matter if it is at OSL or LHR...
On the A380 i think there is some rows with only two seats together instead of three. If you are a familiy of four, try to get to of these. The A380 seemed ok, even in Y. I had to "suffer" in C though.
Arrgh... I completely forgot SK's new no checking luggage on two disjoint reservations policy... this year I managed to convince them to check luggage on ARN-SK J-ORD-UA T-DTW on two separate tix without problems. But on Jan 4 I'm on ARN-SK L-FRA-LH Z-DTW with lots of luggage. Lets see if I can manage to sneak 2x32KG by them... wish me luck!
From my experience, other *A carrier -> SAS(SQ->SK & OZ->SK) worked fine while SAS -> other *A carrier(SK->SQ, SK->OZ & SK->TG) didn't work when I tried to through-check luggage by two seperate tickets after new policy.
Thanks BHIL,
It seems that you made a journey similar to the one I am planning. I would like to merge the two bookings and I would like to check in our luggage all the way from ARN, but I am not counting on it.
It was nice of you to give me some details about the distances at LHR Terminal 3.
My biggest concern is if we are late from ARN to LHR or from SIN to LHR.
Hopefully I can call SQ at LHR at ask them to rebook us if we are late from ARN.

Yes, you should be fine. With that much time only an SK cancellation or another SK strike would cause you and your family to miss your SQ connection
The SQ tickets from LHR are good value, especially know with the current exchange rate of the GBP. Good idea with the travel insurance. You might be able to cover yourself against missing your connection.
Upstairs in the back can be recommended on the A380. Unfortunately SQ know sells the emergency exit seats for a fee but the space in normal Y is still nice on the A380.
The checkin agent immediately found my SK booking and then tried to check me in for the LH leg but couldn't. We agreed that she would check my luggage thru and I would take care of the BP for the LH segment in FRA
In FRA LH took my luggage tags and checked everything in without problems.

Last month at ORD the CI agent had no hesitation in tagging our bags all the way through for ORD-CPH (SK) and CPH-TMP (SK) on separate tix. (In fact, he even gave us our boarding passes for the connecting flight.) So, the policy is not universally applied but, again, it would probably not be wise to count on getting that favour.

Funny, I did the exact same thing at ARN about three weeks ago, had a separate LH ticket xFRA and they happily checked my bags but could obviously not check me in. (OTOH they typically doesn´t manage to check in for connecting LH flights at ARN anyhows). So, now the wordpad trick is all out on FT.

I have heard that this "No through check-in of bags on separate tickets" rule has been abolished recently ? Can anyone confirm this ?

I don't think the rule has been abolished (really, why would SAS do that?), I'm pretty sure there is even a note about it on the SAS website.
The question is how the rule is applied in practice.
I have also been lucky on having my bag through-checked with two separate tickets, but I'm pretty sure it helps a lot if you are well prepared (like having the brilliant piece of paper Oliver uses), if you avoid having the tighest possible connection time (increasing the likelihood to misconnect, which would cost the airline money), and if you are a status passenger.
Being nice and friendly is also always a good advice.

Thank you everyone, especially Oliver and Jacob for some really good advice!
I will use the word pad trick.
We had a small discussion here at home about the safest way to get all bags down to SIN where we are having a stopover;
Option 1: Really try to get them checked through all the way
Option 2: Collect the bags at LHR and then check them in again.
I think option 1 sounds so convenient, but maybe it involves a higher risk of loosing the bags on the way down to SIN?

If they agree to check them all the way through I would not expect you to have anymore risk then if you had both flights on the same ticket.
Option 2 would be a backup for option 1 if I was in your shoes.
Just to confuse you guys even more....
I have just realised that we would need the little pram for the baby at LHR where we have 4 hours.
I wonder if we would confuse SK groundstaff at ARN if we try to checkin all the bags through to SIN, but the pram just to LHR.
Unfortunately they wont allow you to have your pram all the way to the gate at ARN, you have to check it in at "Special bagage"
Another alternative would be if we could borrow a pram at LHR for a few hours if its possible? Then we could checkin all luggage + pram all the way to SIN.
If so, that would probably be the better option - in theory the pram will be returned to you at the gate at LHR, saving you having to go wait for it at baggage claim.
I would check the pram all the way to SIN and manage in LHR. SK doesn't do pram delivery at gate, so you would have to treck down to luggage claim and get back in thru security etc. If you check all thru you can relax in the lounges/restaurants in T3 and maybe organise a high chair.

Ok, thanks again.
I wonder why SK (or rather all staff at ARN?) refuse parents to take the pram to the gate?
This always happens to us at ARN, but not at other airports arund the world.
