As of late, I'd welcome a lack of harmonization in even more areas.

It's just fine with me if they tax booze as is (i.e., with a lack of EU harmonization); it's the other areas of taxation that concern me more substantially.

I made the trip in the late 1980's but you might be right -- I took three ferries rides during it and might be confusing them.

Having been told by my USN that booze and smokes were so expensive, I decided to stock up on both at the Duty Free shop in the airport at TLV. (I smoke, she didn't, but she liked to drink at lot more than I do.)

I probably left TLV with about 5 cartons of cigarettes and three bottles of booze. I was on an SAS itinerary which had me landing in Copenhagen and flying back from Stockholm (via Copenhagen).

My first ferry was from Denmark to Germany and when I discovered it had a Duty Free, I picked up a few more bottles of booze.

From Germany, I drove down to a business meeting in Italy. Italian wine being my favorite kind, and prices for it being fairly low, I bought several bottles of Valpolicello, Bardolino, and Soave.

From there I had a second meeting in Switzerland and, naturally, added a few local Swiss wines to the stock. After a third meeting, in Wuppertal Germany, I went to a local store and got some shnapps as well as a case of German beer.

Naturally, on the ferry from Germany to Denmark, I had to go back to the Duty Free shop. I am fairly sure that I remember getting even more booze on the DK-SE ferry but you may be right about that part. I definitely remember seeing lots of people covering up their stashes with blankets and got a bit worried about how much booze I was taking with me: after all, I didn't have a blanket!

I decided to take a pro-active approach to Customs and not give them the chance to call me over for an inspection. The first person who stopped me at the crossing was the guy who just looked at passports. After showing mine to him, I drove right up to the Customs' guy and asked, "Where can I get on E4?"

He told me. I thanked him and immediately drove off!

first of all, let me say this is a great initiative.

second: driving in stockholm: i NEVER payed parking, used bus lanes as my own private road (great out of roslagstull in the rush hour), and threw whatever tickets i got into the paper bin. never got anyone of them back to norway, allthough i lived in sto for 3 years.

i use snus, and i suggest a poll on how many EB people do. for those who dont know what it is, its chopped tobacco, that you put under your lip. keep it there for an amount of time, then take out.

its about as disgusting as it appears, but then again so is a lot of the other stuff we put in our mouths. my personal favorite is halv sheep head, with the eye as the best part. Off course the rotten fish (so rotting that the cans bulge outwars..) is not good at all.

needless to say, this food is all an excuse go drink huge amounts of booze (which is good when you have food that actually either looks back on you, or smells really really really bad)

girls: lets just say, there are som pretty good looking girls in israel as well, especially backpacking in thailand

"Throw-away ticketing" -- of the non-airline sort -- works for many in the UK too, especially if the car is registered outside of the UK. But then we are back to ferries.

Dovster, keep in mind that most female EB members don't use snus, but also remember that many men don't either. We don't want any confusion.

movingalong, before you say anything incriminating about someone who may be amongst Dovster's near and dear, I would like to caution you: Dovster has received food and funds from two militaries and he may be armed and dangerous. His pen -- or keyboard -- is mightier than the sword.

One thing, which should be noted, is that there is unfortunately only a few female EB members in this forum. Or then there is many but most of them are just lurking ...

Okay, I'm sorry but I can't help posting this:

Q: What's "snu"?

A. Not much. What's snu with you?

I thought we are going to have a Norwegian frequent flyer drive to recruit female EB members to get us to the popular 50% threshold for female participation there. (Is "flyer drive" an oxymoron? )

By measure of EBS/EBG luggage tags, there have to be a good number of EBSs and EBGs -- and an even bigger pool of regular EB members -- to pick up, right?

Who is going to lead this effort? Should we draft Tommy777 since he has such a good record of delivering the goodies?

Snus is known as "dip" in the U.S., which is a much bigger market than Sweden, even though Sweden uses four times as much per capita. The only three signficant markets in the world are really USA, Sweden and Norway due to this strange EU ban.

Sometimes it is referred to as "wet snuff" but I strongly associate snuff with something you put up your nose.

The classic image of a snus using athlete is Glenn Stromberg circa 1989 being interviewed after a game with a massive bulge under his upper lip and the juicy brown lump covering the upper half of his front teeth. The American users put it less conspicuously in the side of the mouth in the lower lip. This, I have been told, generates saliva and the need to spit more than the Swedish method.

Using "dip" is strictly low class in the US but it has become more socially acceptable in Sweden. But historically terms like "snusgubbe" evolved for a reason.

I'll refrain from making comments about snus-users in Sweden.

It painful to see more swedish women using snus since the smoking ban came into play. Its just not attractive.

Have you seen that Hotel Rival in Stockholm is on 97th place on the Tripadvisor top 100 lists of world class hotels? Its owned by Benny Andersson from ABBA and looks really nice actually. I'd never heard about it before reading the article.

I read it on N24.se (in Swedish): http://www.n24.se/dynamiskt/nyheter/did_12067201.asp

Hotel Rival in English:

Lounge access!
I will be in the CPH lounge tomorrow from 12.30-14.30 if anyone wants to meet up and grab a beer.

I'd certainly not place Rival in the top 100 list of world class hotels. Maybe the top 100 list of Scandinavian/Nordic class hotels.

Can you tell that I find Scandinavia to be a laggard when it comes to world class hotels, because the service aspect is never consistently great? (Even the physical plant leaves something to be desired too often.)

I agree that service levels in Scandinavia is much lower than in Asia for example but the same could be said about most hotels in Europe & US - especially when you compare hotels in the same price range
