They regularly use all kinds of widebodies on 3-4 hour flights in the US (sometimes even 747s). Usually only on hub-hub routes.

We get 777-300s on 1 to 2 hour domestic flights in Japan.

I guess for SK it may be more expensive than sending the usual A32?, but still less expensive than cancelling and the associated rebooking and EU261 costs...

One A330 must have been out of service last week:

09JUL16
SK910 09JUL16 EWR-CPH cancelled
SK910 09JUL16 EWR-CPH cancelled due technical reasons.
09JUL16
SK907 09JUL16 OSL-EWR cancelled
SK907 09JUL16 OSL-EWR cancelled due technical reasons.
Many carriers use spare widebody capacity on regional routes, TK is a prime example.

When Swedish pilots were striking, Lufthansa used their spare A343 in FRA to run the morning LH802/3 rotation to ARN in order to help out SK to rebook stranded pax.

LN-RKH (A330) was stranded four days in IAD last week, and when it was back in service, a new problem arose just after take-off on its first flight from OSL. It diverted to CPH.

That a/c has have tech several times. Was grounded most of Easter. Is back in service as of today.

Touch down in Novosibirsk

SK 998 (PVG-CPH) has landed at Novosibirsk today after a sudden loss of pressure and emergency descent, according to Danish media and Flightradar24. A/C involved is OY-KBA.

Help is on its way – OY-KBM is already over Russia as SK 9227. Expensive rescue. But also a good gesture.

Well these birds (excepting A330E) may well look great on the inside, but seems like tech issues are on the increase big time. A350 is looking a long way away still with 2019 first delivery..

And NRT

Also today: SK 983 (OY-KBC) cancelled due to tech. Was ready at 21.00, but then crew ran out of time. Then one hour later it departed for NRT without pax.

I've been dealing with so many disrupted SK US flights (in both directions) this year, that even DY may end up lumped in with SK on the menu.

But SK is more willing to reroute, but they too leave enough to be desired in that regard (of rebooking).

The dispatch reliability of the A330/340 should be better if not similar to the A330E/A359. SAS problem is their small fleet and heavily booked schedule. This will not get better with the A359, as they will retire some aircraft and open new routes when the deliveries start.
